I make it like this. My mum and nan's receipe, all my sisters make it this way too.
Boil a piece of ham, it could be any cheap piece, for at least an hour
Remove the ham and let the liquid cool before skimming any fat from the top.
Add grated swede, carrots, onions and peas, I used a can of pease pudding, and add chopped up ham pieces. Warm through and eat, it's delicious. Some people will used marrowfat or process peas instead of the yellow, just used what you prefer.

I love pea and ham soup. Mmmmmm. I've never made it, but would probably use frozen petit pois.

I've made it using yellow split peas. and the stock and veggies as dragon uses.

You have to soak the peas overnight first, (I use half a packet, and they swell up enormously), then you gave to boil them thoroughly when you cook them otherwise they can have toxins in......don't worry it's not as bad as it sounds!!!

Or if you prefer "green" pea soup then use a different type of peas.

If you don't want to boil a ham/bacon joint, you can use a chunk of chorizo/salami to get the flavour.
