i read this book a few years ago when we were visiting Egypt.

We were on a cruise down the nile and this book was passed to me by a lovely lady. And it was a book i couldn't put down.

Anything by Bill Bryson (travel writer)....a laugh a minute, and very informative at the same time.

Now I don't get on with Bill Bryson, he is too cynical, and seems to be laughing AT the locals, rather than WITH them. Using them for his own ends, somehow.

For an example of a book which simply enjoys what ti finds, and starts out like a traveller trying to write about his experiences, but ends up with you realisng that the book is actually by an author writing about his travels .......

.......try "500 Mile Walkies" by Mark Wallington...I tbough it was out of print but I see it's being re-published next month...

Possibly to write a book, do you think? I agree to a point - but he is consistent..and it is his fellow yanks that get most of the stick.

well as far as i can tell we've had all the suggestions that were definates so looking back i can see these 3 being mentioned:

Tango Bunny - Stuart a life backwards and Alexander Masters

Cadge - Kathys Story - Kathy O'beirne

Elaine - Maps for lost lovers - Nadeem Aslam

there are descriptions on the previous page

Mixters suggested a Bill Bryson - but not a specific one - so if you want us to read one then name your book guest!!!
