piggybacking plants

ive got an acer which we bout 6 years ago and i konw it has been grafted onto another stalk, stem trunk wotever but the trunk stalk thing is now finding a way out , ive got loads of brances and leaves comming on byt in a couple of places there are some very diferent leaves, now as this has been a very slow growing tree and it gets covered in moss(?) shall i let the other tree take over and see if we can get a bigger plan out of it or not,,,,,,,,,,,,,,ps ive got a bush thats doin the same,,, half is evergreen leaves and bits of it are varigated??

Hilda, a lot of varigated plants end up growing solid colour leaves. You need to take them off or the whole thing will revert to the solid colour. So, unless you don't mind that, take off the non-varigated ones NOW. Do it when it's not too hot, then give it a good drink to make up for the moisture lost from losing the leaves.

Oh, nearly forgot the acer

Do you know what rootstock it's grafted onto? (possible it's just another acer, but might not be)
Is the graft burried? If it is it will start to shoot and you may end up with something different, when you originally wanted the acer.

oh thinks for that,,,,,,,,,, the varigated is more non-varigated than varigated, i think i bought it as evergreen and the varigated popped up??? asa for the acre the graft is toward the top of the trunk
ill post a piccy of the new leaf to see if i can get any clues of its origin,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

The varigation needs sunlight if you didn`t already know that Hilda.

If you place them in shaded areas they will gradually lose it, I know that is true with Ivy and Busy-Lizzy but think that it applies to other plants as well.

Hilda, i wouldnt let the graft take over, you will loose the acer......

as for variegated, it has to chopped off back to the base to start again...but leave the variegated alone...

right the acer lives...........ill chop the other bits off
as for the varigated thingy,,,, its gettin a cut when i can grip me shears....its a 2 tone, the varigated bit of the bush is a lot thinner tho,,, and sparse.. i might just let that get taken over,,

I think the acer is on its way out if the graft is failing. You are going to end up with a poxy sycamore or something of the sort hilda.

ther are only a few leaves on the acer that are not its own so ive done ok, when we first had it there was a whole shoot, that got lobbed off,,,,, its been in the garden for about 6 years now so its done ok, bull ill just pull of any offending leaves,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,cheers percy

Is it in a pot, or in the ground...
acer dont like wind..frosts..it might have got a slight bit of frost bite...

its in the ground......... its a pink and green one, not the normal reddy one.... it did really well last year cos it was a wet summer here,,,,, the damp seemed to do it good!
