I see there is quite a bit of support for James Herbert here...I've read all his books since the Rats..which I managed to read in an afternoon on the train. I like the way his stories are set in Britain and the horror can emerge in mundane settings we can all identify with. I enjoyed the Rat trilogy, The Fog, Survivor, Shrine and Fluke (which is not a horror story but is an intriguing tale of reincarnation). To be honest I think his stuff of recent years is not his best, but still keep reading each new book in the hope of a return to form of his earlier years.

I'm a fan of James Herbert too - the first book I read of his was "Rats" - I started reading it on a Sunday when I had a ferocious hangover, I could not put the book down, even though I was bricking myself reading it . I got three quarters the way through it before stopping for breath, then had to put it in another room out of sight, cos it had unsettled me so much.
I then went on to read almost everything he's written I think.

Loved "What Katy did" in school, and my all time favourite book which has stood the test of time with me since my primary school days is "Village School" by Miss Read (aka Muriel Spark). I still have a copy of it, and I'll be reading it to my daughter in a couple of years.
