Palm TreesWe have quite a few palm trees in the garden. Every time we empty a hanging basket we plant out the central plant. Now it looks like Kew Gardens at ours and they are about 5ft tall Anyway, they all have white flowers growing out of the top. Is this good or bad? It's a pain having to climb up with the ladder to cut them off when they've finished flowering. They look untidy if we leave them.

Hi Hilary.....
There is a species of true palm tree that flowers after 20 to 25 years and it then dies monocarpic
One of the things that puzzles me about palms, yuccas and cordylines is that i often see yuccas and cordylines labelled as palms and called trees although i'm not sure if its the right way to label them :?:
Think yourself lucky you don't have the really smelly south american one that they do have at Kew

They are a creamy coloured flower like lots of fingers growing out the top. This is the first year they have flowered and look very healthy. They are a pain when they die off because they don't just fall off. They look like dead stalks and have to be cut off.

It sounds like the Australian Palm we had. It grew so big, as tall as the house, that we cut it down, it just grew again, but now we trim it and keep it controlled.

I think we will need to rename our house " The Palm House" It's a waste to throw away good palms when you empty the baskets .I'm running out of room to put them. I've already given away 4 huge ones!
