shorty

Lois yes I am further along the alphabet than that....will have a look on my shelves and see what's there

Ooh mad, I like Lesley Pearce
numberplease

I`ve read a couple of others of hers Carol, but I read them out of sequence, before I realised that she was going through the alphabet. I`ve read K and P. This is an omnibus, that`s why I`m reading 3 after each other.
numberplease

Just finished second part of the omnibus, now for I for Innocent. Really enjoying these, love the Kinsey Millhone character.
k&r

shorty

Yes please Karen.

Lois I love her too, she's a brill character!
numberplease

I`m reading I is for Innocent at the moment, then I`m going to start on Please Daddy No, by Stuart Howarth. It`s time I read it, it`s quite a while since he was on TV the first time, and I`ve had the book a while now, so it`s next on the list. If anyone wants it afterwards let me know.
k&r

i go all tense and angry, and my heart beats to fast........almost half way through, i am dreading reading it, but on the other hand, i cant stop
shorty

i am now reading the biography of a girl who was snatched when she was 12 and held captive for 8 yrs.......
GoldenChippie

youre only reading Dark towers so you can get ahead in the quiz
numberplease

Finished I is for Innocent, fantastic, now I`ve started Please Daddy No, by Stuart Howarth. He`s written another, Finding Stuart, I`ll have to look out for it.
k&r

whats the innocent book about number?
numberplease

Karen, it`s one of Sue Grafton`s books. She`s working her way through the alphabet with her titles. She writes about a female private investigator called Kinsey Millhone. I haven`t read them in the correct order though, and there are still a few I haven`t read.guest loves them as well, she`s probably read them all. This is the 3rd in an omnibus of G, H and I. You can have it if you think you`d like them.
k&r

hmmmmmmmmmm thanks for the offer but it doesnt sound like my cup of tea

i am reading

I CHOOSE TO LIVE by sabine dardenne.........she was pinched out riding her bike and imprisoned for 8 years, true story.......

you can have that when i have finished if you would read it?
numberplease

Yes please Karen, I wouldn`t mind giving it a go. I do like the true story ones in between the thrillers now and again. I`ll pm you my address when you`ve finished it.
k&r

ok, it wont take me long!

pm me when you get a mo.........
GoldenChippie

Ive just finished the Pact - Jodi Picoult

and i was really dissapointed - started off so promising and just faded away at the end

who could recommend something with a really good gripping story for me?
shorty

Dark Tower 1, The gunslinger
numberplease

I finished Please Daddy No earlier. A very interesting, if sad, read. Now I`m back in my comfort zone with James Patterson and Andrew Gross`s Judge and Jury. I like to get back to fiction for a while after reading true life stories, especially the harrowing ones.
k&r

me too, now reading jack osbournes biography.......

number i will post the book today for you..........!
numberplease

Bless you Karen, thank you.
shorty

I am just finishing Chromosome 6 (the second one in the double Robin Cook you sent me, Lois and it was ace!!!!) and about to start the second Dark Tower one......The Drawing of the Three
numberplease

Glad you liked the Robin Cook, I haven`t read a lot of his, they don`t show up that often. The one I`m reading now, James Patterson and Andrew Gross, looks poromising. Have you read Judge and Jury?
shorty

oooh I cannot remember if thats the last one of there's I read.....looking on my higgeldy piggeldy shelves...what's it about? xx
numberplease

A mafia boss going on trial, I think he`s going to put a contract out on the jury.
shorty

ooh it sounds good...doesn't ring a bell but that doesn't mean I haven't read it I have a dreadful memory
numberplease

Bright orangey-yellow cover?
shorty

ooh maybe not then! I will ransack the bookshelves tomorrow and check, Lois xx
numberplease

If your hangover lets you!
shorty

I am still surprisingly coherent Lois, the wine just isn't hitting the spot!!!!
Acorncup

When I'm in the library, I remember whether I've read a book, by the picture on the cover

I remember that more than the title
numberplease

Finished Judge and Jury, brilliant! It`d make a great film. Am now about halfway through I Choose to Live, by Sabine Dardenne, courtesy of Karen, enjoying it, if that`s the right word to use.
Maid Marian

I've just finished reading the fourth book in the Maisie Dobbs series of books by Jacqueline Winspear.

You can read more about them here

I really enjoyed reading them and can't wait for the next one to come out next year
numberplease

guest, did you check your bookshelf, `cos you can have Judge and Jury if you want it.
madsue

I'm reading A Spot of Bother by Mark Haddon. It's a totally different book for me as I usually read chick lit, but I think I'm enjoying it
numberplease

What sort of book is it Sue?
madsue

It's about a guy who has just retired, who begins to lose his mind. That sounds awful, but it is about him and his family, and it is quite funny!!!! Very cleverly written.
GoldenChippie

didnt he write the curious incident of the dog in the nighttime? or something like that???

let me know what its like Sue!!!
madsue

Yep, thats the one gail. I am enjoying it, though it is taking me longer to read than my normal rubbish!!!!! Some of the thoughts going through various characters heads have made me squirm they are so true!!!!!
numberplease

I`ll have to look for it, see if I fancy it.
madsue

I got it on Cambridge train station for half price!!!!!
GoldenChippie

i'll have a look for it
snowqueen4

Just finished "Fatawa" about an English girl, whom after a holiday romance in Egypt for a week ends up marying him!!

The book is her story of how her life changes for the worse, and her journey of escapism.

A very good read. Have also read "Sold" by Zana Mushen (similar true story)

If anyone knows of any other similar reads please let me know
numberplease

They sound like good reads Snowqueen, who wrote Fatwa?
madsue

I finished A Spot of Bother last night, and yes I did enjoy it. Compared to my usual reads, I didn't know how it was going to end, which made a change.

Don't think I would bother to buy his other book though.

Am now reading Six Reasons to Stay a Virgin by Louise Harwood, which is back to my normal chick lit
Emma

I have that book Sue but never read it!
Do you like Chick -Lit reads? I have absolutely tons of them books here, let me know if you want any and i'll see if i have it and i'll send them over to you.
madsue

I probably read 4 a week Emma!!!!! My trouble is finding ones I haven't already read!! Mind you, they are so forgettable, I sometimes find myself reading the same ones again at a later date without realising it!!!!

Thanks for the offer though!!
Emma

I dont mind sending you some over though, i normally send them to America or Australia to the girls who can tget English Authors. Dont forget the offers there.
GoldenChippie

Sue Mark Haddons first book is deffo worth a read
snowqueen4

Numberplease, sorry forgot to mention -"fatawa" the author is Jacky Trevan
numberplease

Thanks Snowqueen, I`ll look out for it.
numberplease

Finished I Choose to Live last night. A very good read Karen, but I can`t figure out why it took 8 years to come to trial.
I`ve just started The Afghan, by Frederick Forsyth, was that one of yours guest? It looks to have all the makings of a really good story, but I`m not that far into it yet.
shorty

yup, the afghan was mine, its great!!!!!!
numberplease

Finished The Afghan, what a fantastic read! Am now reading The Mephisto Club, by Tess Gerritsen, wonderfully gory!
shorty

I've read that, brilliant!! Was it mine? xxx
numberplease

It surely was, guest. I only started it last night and I`m halfway through, love all the blood and gore!
numberplease

Finished The Mephisto Club earlier, brilliant! It`d make a cracking film.
I`ve decided to have another go at the only book I`ve ever given up on, nearly 50 years ago when I was 14 or 15, War and Peace, so wish me luck! There are 958 pages, I`ve reached page 14 so far.
shorty

I read Damaged (very sad) and Too Good toBe True, Sheila O'Flanagan (good easy read) last week, now on the third Dark Tower book, The Waste Lands and loving it.
numberplease

Still plodding on with War and Peace, reached page 158, it`s easier than last time, but all the Russian names are a bit confusing. Fear not, I intend to finish it, only 800 pages to go!
shorty

go, number, go!!!!!
numberplease

madsue

Well done you number....is it interesting I remember deciding when I was young to read all of Alexander Solshenetzkfadjdoodah, Gulag Archipelagro etc!!!!! I did do it, but for the life of me, can't remember why, or what the books were like
numberplease

It`s not bad Sue, but like I said it`s difficult getting my tongue around the names. When I was 14 I read Anna Karenina and enjoyed it, so then thought I`d progress to this one, but it defeated me, so I`m determined to do it this time. Well done you for reading all those Alexander thingie`s books! Bet it took some doing.
GoldenChippie

Im reading a load of dross called the Friday night knitting club............i cant read more than a few pages without nodding off
madsue

I think it was when I was going through my swotty, pretentious stage (moi!!) Bit like when I took to carrying around a copy of the Metaphysical Poets, not having a clue what any of the poetry was about A bloke I fancied had taken to reading it to me, and I thought it was soooooo romantic to be read to
numberplease

No-ones ever read to me, poetry or whatever
GoldenChippie

or me
shorty

"By the shores of Gitchy Gummy
By the shining big sea water
Stood the wigwam of nakomi
Daugter of the moon Nakomi"
numberplease

numberplease

Do you fancy War and Peace when I`ve finished it guest? Or anyone? Don`t all speak at once!
numberplease

Well, it`s taken me 4 long weeks and 2 days, but I`ve managed to finish War and Peace! Back to normal reading now, just started The Risk of Darkness, by Susan Hill.
numberplease

Finished Risk of Darkness, can recommend it, now reading Buried, by Mark Billingham, not sure about it just yet, only just started it.
Simon

Just started on a compact version of Ovid's The Serpents Teeth, pretty nice for something picked out of the bargain bin for a euro
numberplease

Finished Buried last night, bit slow at the start, but turned out to be good. Halfway through Without Warning, by Carol Smith now. As with another of her books I  read, lots of characters, takes a while for it all to gel, but OK now.
numberplease

Managed to finish it in time for Christmas, enjoyed it. Now reading For the Sake of Elena, by Elizabeth George.
eloisa

I got Patricia Cornwells "The Book of The Dead" and Martina Coles "Faces" for Xmas, have finished them both and enjoyed them both greatly!
I still think that Cornwell has slipped from earlier books but this one is much better than Predator was.
Faces is the usual London gangland type thing but it was a bit more poignant than her usual efforts.
Lisa xx
numberplease

Eloisa, is Book of the Dead a Scarpetta novel? If so, I`ll keep a lookout for it, I like Cornwell a lot, but Kathy Reichs has caught up in popularity I think.
eloisa

Hi    Yes, it's the latest Scarpetta book and is defintely worth a read. She is still writing in the 3rd person which I am still struggling with and, without giving too much away she does things with Marino in this book that I don't like, although I can see it is a culmination of things from the previous few books.
Definitely think it's better than Predator, grab it from a second hand shop in case you disagree!
I have been into Kathy Reichs from the start, have read them all and think Tempe is more "human" than Kay, loved "Monday Mourning", having said that for me, Cornwell still reigns

Lisa xx
numberplease

I`m not sure who I prefer, I`m divided, have read all the Scarpetta books, and all Temp Brennan ones as well. Have just finished For the Sake of Elena, by Elizabeth George. It was OK, but have read better. Have just started The Coffin Dancer, by Jeffrey Deaver.
alit

Just read the Memory keepers daughter that was good.
numberplease

I`ve finished The Coffin Dancer, it was brilliant! Would make a fantastic film. Have now started A Thousand Golden Suns, by Khaled Hosseini, not sure how it`ll go down with me, it`s not my usual kind of read.
McBabe

I'm reading Hugh Fearnley-Wittingstalls 'River Cottage Cookbook'

I thought there would be more recipes in but its mostly how to grow your own and raise your own livestock eg: how to choose the best breeders for your herd, how to protect your chickens from foxes & badgers !

Its interesting reading though
numberplease

Correction, it`s  A Thousand Splendid Suns,...........silly me! It`s not bad, actually.
numberplease

Just finished A Thousand Splendid Suns. What a brilliant book! Miles removed from what I usually read, but really enjoyed it, sad though it was. Anybody fancies giving it a try, let me know, I`ll post it on.
numberplease

Have just started The Cold Moon, by Jeffrey Deavers, another of the Lincoln Rhyme books, so it should be good.
numberplease

Said book now spoken for.
numberplease

I`ve finished A Cold Moon, it was good, but the Lincoln Rhyme stories are. Just started Kill Me, by Stephen White, an author I don`t know.
alit

I thought a thousand splendid suns was excellent, want to read kite runner next,
numberplease

So would I like to try it Alit. I only bought A Thousand Splendid Suns because it was on special offer, it`s not my usual sort of read, but it was really good.
numberplease

I`ve finished Kill Me, it was a bit slow and confusing to start with, but turned into a good book. Am now reading the first part of an omnibus by  Lynne Heitman, the first one is called Hard Landing.
numberplease

Finished Hard Landing, slow to start, but not bad overall, now for the 2nd part of the omnibus, Parts Unknown.
numberplease

I`ve finished Parts Unknown, it was very good, a bit of a follow on from Hard Landing, but much better. Am now about to start another omnibus, this one by Peter Lovesey, titles are The House Sitter and Upon a Dark Night.
numberplease

Read House sitter and enjoyed it, have started the 2nd part of the omnibus, Upon a Dark Night, and have found top my annoyance that it was written before the other one, and where the bloke is a widower in the one I`ve just finished because his wife was murdered, in this she`s still alive!
tinkerbelle

The Secret River by Kate Grenville.
It is a story about a Thames waterman in the 1800s who was convicted of a crime and transported to Australia with his family.  A really good read. Just finished it and  recommend it.
Margaret
numberplease

Can recommend The Kite Runner, by Khaled Hossein, it was the predecessor to A Thousand Splendid Suns, and they`re both brilliant books.
At the moment I`m reading The Woods, by Harlan Coban, and enjoying it. Haven`t read anything of his before.
