I usually get my books in asda or tesco, £3.73, thats not as good as what you pay....hmm next time I come to Boston you have to take me there"!!!!
numberplease

Will do, it`s right in the town centre, inthe new shopping precinct.
numberplease

I`ve just finished Taken. Enjoyed it a lot. Don`t know if the author (ess?) has written anything else, there`s no ist in the front of the book. I`ve just started Break No Bones, by Kathy Reichs, I always enjoy her books, they`re great.
numberplease

Took Break no Bones away to finish, then read At Risk, by Patricia Cornwell, not up to her usual standard, My Best Friend`s Girl, by Dorothy Koomson, courtesy of guest, not my usual kind of read, but I enjoyed it, The Blue Zone, by Andrew Gross, very good, and Relentless, by Simon Kernick, brilliant. Never come across him before, but will be looking out for his new one Severed.
numberplease

I`ve just finished Triptych, by Karin Slaughter. It was a great read, as her books always are, even though it was a departure from the characters she usually writes about. I`m just about to start on Forget Me Not, by Mandasue Heller, another writer new to me.
numberplease

Forget me Not was a bit disappointing at first, I found it hard to like the characters, but improved in the 2nd half of the book. Don`t know if I`d read any more of hers though. I`ve now got started on The Caller, by Alex Barclay, but I think I should have read her other book first, then I would perhaps understand better what the characters had been through earlier.
alit

Just read Street Kid by Judy Westwater a harrowing but excellent read about a true life of one very brave woman:

http://www.harpercollins.co.uk/mi...etkid/books/default.aspx?id=34028

Well worth a read.
numberplease

Finished The Caller, enjoyed it, surprisingly, because someone, maybe guest, said they didn`t like Alex Barclay. I`ve now started Mistress of Justice, by Jeffrey Deaver. It`s my first one of his books, hope it impoves, bit dull at the moment.
Emma

Im reading Marshamallows for Breakfast by Dorothy Koomson
numberplease

Emma, I read My Best Friend`s Girl by her a short while ago. Not my usual kindof book, but I still enjoyed it.
Emma

I have alreday read My Best Friends Girl and i really liked it too plus i made contact with the author so decided to read this one and it is sort of similar but not as good.
Chelseagirl

I am reading THE REAL OLIVER TWIST, about Robert Blincoe., by John Waller.
"A life that illuminates a violent age"

Really interesting, and sad who these workhouse kids were treated.
GoldenChippie

numberplease

GoldenChippie

shorty

numberplease

Thanks, were any of those others any use?
shorty

oh yes, they are lined up on my overfull bookcase ready for reading!!
numberplease

Good. I`m still ploughing through my first Jeffrey Deaver, not overstruck, but will finish it, and I`ve got another of his on my pile yet!
shorty

ooh I love his, number!
numberplease

I thought it was you who said he was good, maybe I`ll like the next one better.
shorty

guest wrote:

I`m reading Mistress of Justice, the other one is The Bone Collector, still in the cupboard.
shorty

ooh Lois did you see the Bone collector when it was a film? I think to be honest that is why I like the books so much....rent the dvd.....Lincoln Ryhmes is Denzel Washington (confusing I know, cos he is white in the books ) and his sidekick Amelka Sachs is Anjelina Jolie in the film.

I enjoy the books SO much cos I picture Denzel and Agelina when I read them!!
numberplease

No, I didn`t see the film, I like Denzil Washington though.
chocaholicsanon

isaw the film, very good. actuzlly seen it three times now...

I am reading The Historian , its about drakula, in modern day wallechia...i am enjoying it...
cant think of the name at the minute but will post when i go down stairs...
shorty

chocaholicsanon

madsue

Oh dear, you all seem to read such posh books! Am I the only one that reads only "fluffy" books!!!!!!
kellie

I have just read a book called Dance for your daddy by Katherine Shellduck its the true story of a brutal east end childhood and it was excellent, i really enjoyed it.
numberplease

Who`s the author Kellie?
kellie

Katherine shellduck its her true story, really interesting
madsue

See I knew it, all to posh to admit they read fluff
shorty

madsue, yes I sometimes read fluff!!!!!
laws1

hello all
Think I may be a first time poster in here. Hardly get the tome to read book exept on holiday, off to the sun in a couple of weeks so will grab a few books.

Have said in another thread I will look out for Gordon Ramseys.
shorty

ooh welcome to the book topic!! Was your "tome" a deliberate slip?
numberplease

I wondered that as well guest!
madsue, I`ve been known to read "fluff" in my time, but a gory, gruesome murder is more up my street, but not literally, I hope!
numberplease

Well, I`ve finished Mistress of Justice, at last, it perked up in the last 100 or so pages, and I started to enjoy it, pity it didn`t happen sooner, I`ve just started The Bone Collector, same author, not got very far yet, but all the signs are that it`s going to be good.
guest, Lynne says we`ve seen The Bone Collector film, but I don`t remember it, and I`m sure I would, as I love Denzil Washington!
shorty

you must remember it if you've seen it, Denzel was a quadriplegic forensic expert and amelie sachs was angelina jolie (or vice versa), a sort of rookie uniform cop, his sidekick!!

OOOH I have a giddy on, do you ever start a book and just know right from page one that its going to be a belter?????

Just started "The Afghan" by Frederick Forsyth and its BRILLIANT!!! I want to read it slowly to make it last!!

Anyone read it?
numberplease

I`ve never read Freddie Forsyth, maybe I should. I`ve seen a couple of films from his books.
gypsy93

i'm reading 'getting rid of matthew' by jane fallon ( think she's ricky gervaise's partner) its really good and captures perfectly that feeling when you've massively gone off someone.
incidently has anyone read 'a place called here' by cecelia ahern--i bought it to take on holiday after reading most of her others and enjoyed them--but this was dire--couldn't get past the third chapter--reviews i've read since mostly feel the same, has anyone read and enjoyed it?
GoldenChippie

Sue - just try picking up a book someones recommended on here

ive read so much different stuff since the book club started (and stopped) but im still reading stuff people are recommending
laws1

guest wrote:

Yes.... Smarty pants
shorty

Mad, I think we all enjoyed "The Girls" by ooh was it Lori Lansing or something? that might be a good one to start on xxx
madsue

Well thank goodness! gypsy has just suggested a book I have actually read!!!! Getting rid of Matthew!! Didn't realise she was Ricky Gervais' partner though. I enjoyed that one!! And yes the Ahern book I didn't like!
madsue

Sorry guest but
Quote:
Sue - just try picking up a book someones recommended on here

is not that easy here!!! There are no bookshops like that! All our books come from second hand boot sales. So I have to rely on tourists bringing books in for me to pick up (ok steal ) from complex libraries!!
Emma

Sue can you not go to the English Bookshop in PDC thats on the corner before the hill to Biosfera?

I finished Getting Rid of Matthew yesterday on my jollies and i loved it. She is either the producer or director of This Life and Teachers
Loulou

I`ve just finished One child and its follow on Tigers child both by Torey Hayden. Both were really good and all her books are, i think, true stories.
GoldenChippie

there is going to be a tv drama of "Stuart, a life backwards", which we had as one of the book club books a while back - i think its on on sunday
madsue

Hi again Emma, yes, I go to both Bookswops, but have read most of the fluff that's in them!!!!!! In fact I give most of my books to them to sell on!!! I did pick up one yesterday when I was in there, Crossing the Paradise Line by Annabel Giles and I am a quarter through it already!!!
Good_Queen_Bess

I enjoy History Books and have just read Alison Weir - Isabella: Queen of England

Enjoyable, although not a "starter" history book - although it does depend on what era of history you enjoy. Weir's Tudor stuff is superb. Her history books read like a novel.

Currently, I am reading a book about Queen Victoria's grandaughters. Next for me is Raymond E Feist: Silverthorn. It's one from ages ago, but I'm just getting into his stuff and want to read it in order.

I have about a zillion boks on my shelf I need to read.
madsue

I must admit GQB, I have always said I hated history!!!! But, having spent a few days at Kentwell Hall at the end of July I found the whole experience of "living history" fascinating

I have to have several books on the go at a time, and I panic if I don't have a wodge of books around ready to read!!! Autobiographies and travel books are favourite reading too, but I need a bit of the "fluff" in between
Emma

I am currently reading The Memory Keepers Daughter by Kim Edwards its a Richard and Judy Summer Read
gypsy93

finished getting rid of matthew yesterday, really enjoyed it. now reading The Second Wife by Elizabeth Buchan. haven't read her before, but it ok so far. sue, i have to have lots of books on the go as well and i like all the chick lit ones although i do read stuff like john grisham, etc.i don't like overly descriptive books, where they go into loads of details about every little thing. glad i wasn't the only one who didn't like the cecelia ahern one--did you actually finish it?
emma--whats the memory keepers daughter like so far, i nearly bought it the other day. don't always like ricky and jude book club ones.
madsue

Do you know gypsy, I can't remember if I did finish it or not I loved the Revenge of the Middle Aged Woman by Elizabeth Buchan, so bought The Second Wife and The Good Wife Fights Back, but I notice I am only half way through both of them So they obviously haven't held my attention!!!
numberplease

I`ve just finished The Bone Collector, it was brilliant. About to start A Necessary Evil, by Alex Kava.
shorty

Halfway through Relentless by Simon Kernick, loving it, Lois I think its one of the ones you gave me xxx
GoldenChippie

i have just finished my best friends girl

hmmm - its just too nicey nicey really, should have been grittier?
numberplease

That`s more or less what I thought Gail, but thought it was because I`m used to reading thrillers. It was OK for a change, but I won`t make a habit out of those sorts of novels.
guest, yes, it is one of mine, I`m on the lookout for his new one, Severed.
Still reading A Necessary Evil, by Alex Kava, and enjoying it.
charlie

I have just finished
'Shame' by Jasvinder Sanghera.
The true story about a 15 year old asian girl who ran away from an arranged marriage.
The story about what happended to her the way she was treated by her family and the asian community.
The way she fought back and helped other asian girls and women.
I couldn't put it down, very interesting a real eye opener.
So sad.
shorty

Charlie that sounds very interesting, is it in the charts and cheap at places like tesco and asda?

Finished Relentless, number, loved it!! I am now reading The Mephisto Club by Tess Gerritsen, its very good...I think its one of mine, Lois, if you haven't read it let me know and I'll send it on when I am done xxx
hilda

i am reading the "sun" news paper cos ive ran out of books!!!!
shorty

oooh I NEVER run out of books, get very twitchy if I have less than 3 lined up!!

When I was a copper the lads would be ogling the nuddie woman in the Sun and I used to approach from behind the paper and burn the nipples out with my fag, it REALLY pissed them off
hilda

oh well done that woman
numberplease

I haven`t read it Carol, so would like to, thank you. Would you like the Alex Kava one? I`ve really enjoyed it, just finished it. Tomorrow I`m starting Cross.
shorty

Anybody got any more they can recommend please.
Any culture.
numberplease

guest, I`ve got started on Cross, looks like it`s going to be GOOD!!
numberplease

Finished Cross, as promised by someone who knows, it was brilliant! Good to get a bit more insight into what happened to Alex`s wife.
I`ve just begun Next, by Michael Crichton, but not really into it properly yet.
shorty

ooh number, I am glad you enjoyed cross like I did!!

NEXT isd a bit different but give it a chance, it grabbed me after a while! I am reading one of yours again and loving it a double Robin Cooke bill, Toxin and something else.....thoroughly enjoying it!!

Asimov's robots would go rusty here. It's pouring.

MM
charlie

Finished 'Damaged' last night.
What a moving sad story.

I think I'm going to have to get myself a more light hearted one to read next.

This book really got into my mind.
I couldn't put it down.
The poor child.
GoldenChippie

I read Marley and Me on my hollers

word of warning - dont read the end on a beach full of strangers and then howl your head of crying!!!

its a great read tho, gentle and funny and fantastic for dog owners and family owners!!!!
numberplease

Finished Next. guest, you were right, it does get better as you go along, I just got a bit bogged down with all the technical and scientific jargon, but the plot was good. Am just getting started on a Sue Grafton omnibus, G is for Gumshoe, His for Homicide, and I is for Innocent. I like Sue Grafton, but I haven`t read her books in order, which I really should have done. guest, I know you like Sue Grafton, have you read these 3?
Loulou

I`ve just finished
Dance for your Daddy by Katherine Shellduck
A true story about her childhood growing up in east end London with her gangster father.
Brilliant, i couldn`t put it down.

Mummys witness by Gayle Sanders
Another true story about witnessing her own mothers murder and what happened after. Very sad.

Ghost Girl by Torey Hayden
All the authors books are true, she was a special needs teacher and a nurse in specialist hospitals and she writes about the lives of her pupils/patients. Every one of her books that i`ve read have all been gripping.
I`ve only got 3 more to read of hers, i hope she writes more.

I`m busy with Twilight children and Just another kid both by Torey hayden.
Loulou

Finished Twilight children last night... It was a bit disapointing compared to her other stuff.
I still enjoyed it but this one told the stories of 3 different people and i thought it drifted a bit.

Starting Just another kid tonight, hope that is better.
GoldenChippie

im reading a Jodi Picoult - the Pact
numberplease

Finished G is for Gunshoe, by Sue Grafton, just started her H is for Homicide. Love her books. It`s an omnibus of 3, so I is for Innocent is next.
shorty
