numberplease

Well, I`ve finished Fire Sale. It was the first book I`d read by Sara Paretsky, I found it a bit slow to start with, but ended up enjoying it. I`ll have to try more of hers. Just started Mary, Mary, by James Patterson, enjoying it so far, but I always enjoy his books.
numberplease

Finished Mary, Mary last night, I`ve just started my very first Jodie Picoult book, Salem Falls.
shorty

number, I think you'd have enjoyed the sara paretsky more if you'd read some of her earlier ones cos you get to know a lot of the same characters really well over a few books.

I love james Patterson too, I enjoyed that Mary Mary

ooh I love all Jodi Picoult's books, I just got the latest (I think) off Amazon, ........I have forgotten the name and as I have a fair few to go at I have lent it to Sharon the Shoulders to read first (I am her library).

I have just started The Girls by Lori Lansens, its one of Dickie and JuJu's book club ones about siamese twins......not got far into it yet but I am loving it x
numberplease

Meant to say, I thought that Mary, Mary was brilliant, looking out for Cross in paperback now.
shorty

oooh is it out in paperback now??? That is a MUST buy for me!
numberplease

Don`t think so Carol, I meant I`m looking out for when it is in paperback. Sorry, I didn`t put it very clearly. I saw another James Patterson in Asda tonight, one written with someone else, but it was hardback, can`t remember the title.
charlie

charlie

Finished the Roy Castle.
It's kind of in two parts.
The first his life growing up and his stage work and then national service and his family.
The second part more of a diary of his fight with Cancer.
Very sad.
shorty

I am half way through My Best Friend's Girl by Dorothy Koomson. It was one of Richard and Judy's summer read books last year.

I have never cried so much in my life at a book!! But its really really good, too.
gypsy93

just finished chart throb by ben elton, which was good, but i hope that isn't what really happens in x factor although i suspect some of it is. the characters in it are parodys of simon, sharon and louie (i wonder if sharon is really like the character in the book--horrid). now i've just started the devil wears prada, haven't seen the film cos i wanted to read the book first.
snowqueen4

Just in middle of reading "Rock Me Gently" by Judith Kelly- an easy read too

Bought yesterday ready for next read Wayne Rooneys other half autobiography- Colleen

numberplease

Finished Salem Falls by Jodie Picoult, and quite surprised myself by enjoying it. I`ve just started another of hers, Vanishing Acts, promising so far.
numberplease

Finished Vanishing Acts last night, liked it a lot. I`m on a bit of a Jodi Picoult bender at the moment, I`ve just started her Perfect Match, but may give her a rest for a bit after this one.
numberplease

Finished Perfect Match this afternoon, very good. Have just started S is for Silence, by Sue Grafton.
numberplease

S is for Silence was very good, it`s only the 2nd book of hers that I`ve read, must try more. I`ve now started The 5th Horseman, by James Patterson with Maxine Paetro.
Also added to my book pile. I`ve got Break no Bones, by Kathy Reichs, and At Risk, by Patricia Cornwell.
shorty

I have read all Sue Grafton's, love them!!

I am reading Jeffrey Deaver, The Coffin dancer at the mo...brilliant like all the others!

just finished Taken by Chris Jordan about a boy that gets abducted...very good!
numberplease

I`m waiting for Please Daddy No, by Stewart Haworth, about a boy who was sexually abused by his stepfather, it`s a true story, he was on This Morning a couple of times, he ended up killing his stepfather and going to prison. The book`s been out for a while, but doesn`t go into paperback till May 8th.

GoldenChippie

have just finished

This book will save your life - by A M Holmes

its about one man emerging from a sort of depression/mid life crisis, i quite enjoyed it, but its quite strange to be honest, had some really funny moments tho
numberplease

I`m about halfway through Flashback at the moment, enjoying it a lot, but keep getting interrupted by people wanting things.
Scarlett

Im reading "Perfect Match" by Jodi Picoult (spelling)

Just finished "Here on Earth" by Alice Hoffman..........thought it was downright plagerism of "Wuthering Heights" If Emily Bronte was alive she would sue
numberplease

Hope you enjoy it guest, have you read her books before? guest and Gail put me onto her, but I`ve only read 3 so far.
Scarlett

Lois Im thoroughly enjoying it so far! I havent read any of her other books .............a colleague in work lent me this one.......and its great to know that there are loads of others when you have enjoyed a book!!!

GoldenChippie

charlie

I have just finished the Dale Winton autobiography.
He has had a very different life to what I would have thought.
Found it interesting.
I now have a choice between
Shane Richie
Geri Halliwell
or Wendy Richards
numberplease

Just finished Flashback by Michael Palmer, brilliant, I must look for more of his books. It`s now in a jiffy bag, it`ll be on it`s way to you tomorrow guest. Just about to start The Charm School, by Nelson Demille. Don`t know how I`ll take to it, I think it`s to do with Russia and the cold war.
sunbear

Currently reading Surviving the Sword - Prisoners of the Japanese 1942-45 by Brian MacArthur. Extremly harrowing accounts, I thought the accounts of conditions on the Thai-Burma railway were bad until I read the chapters on Hellships and Sandakan.
numberplease

I finally finished The Charm School. It`s not my usual sort of read, and quite long, but after I got into it I hated every time I had to put it down. Just started The Pact, by Jodie Picoult.
shorty

lois, if you liked the charm school there are some others of his that were brilliant, I'll have a google as I have forgotten their names!
numberplease

I did like it when I got into it properly, but must admit to nearly giving up in the first few pages, never heard of Nelson Demille before.
k&r

Pam7

First They Killed My Father by Loung Ung - A daughter of Cambodia Remembers!
shorty

oh God, I cry at the Jeremy Chav show, I dont know if I'd cope with that one Pam
Elaine

guest,

Do you mean you cry because you can't get in the telly and smack Jeremy Chav's smug mug ?

Keeping this on topic (ish) - the last book I cried at was The Take by Martina Cole - if you haven't read it I won't spoil it - but omg .

Elaine
Pam7

They've got in print again Survival in the Killing Fields - copy I had was really old and out of print. This new one has about 30 extra pages at the back with what had happened in the 15 years since the book was first printed. I bought the Loung Ung book off Amazon at the same time..and her follow up .. After They Killed Our Father - this one is a chapter on her life in America and a chapter on how her sister lived who stayed in Cambodia. I SOOOO want to go to Cambodia!
numberplease

Karen, I was going to look for Please Daddy No when I`m up town on Saturday, I enquired a few weeks ago and was told May 8th for paperback, but I`m going to look for special offers before I get it.
guest, I`ll keep a lookout for The Golden Lion, but as I said, I`ve never come across him before. By the way, I meant to ask you, what did you make of the Richard Laymon books? I know they`re not top literary fiction, and some people think they`re rubbish, but they`re OK for when you want a bit of light entertainment and an easy read, I like them now and again.
shorty

I enjoyed them, number, there aren't many books I dislike to be honest!
numberplease

I`ve just remembered, I had another of his books in my car boot stock, I`ll have a look as soon as the garage is sorted and accessible, see if I still have it.

shorty

GoldenChippie

numberplease

guest, the author was on This Morning a couple of times. He was abused by his stepfather as a child, then as an adult he killed him. He`s written another book now, about how it`s affected the way he lives his life, I think.
shorty

ooh I remember now, number, I saw him on This Morning! Thanks x
k&r

i think i can see a little trip to asda coming up today before i go to work
numberplease

I`ve been up town today Karen, and I didn`t save an awful lot after all. W.H.Smith have it at £3-99.

numberplease

I finished The Pact on my way to Leeds yesterday, thought it was brilliant. Am just about to start on another Jodi Picoult book, Keeping Faith.
numberplease

Finished Keeping Faith earlier, very good. Just about to start on Sue Grafton`s P is for Peril.
numberplease

Finished P is for Peril yesterday, as usual, Sue Grafton didn`t disappoint. Am just starting on God`s Callgirl, by Carla Van Raay, a true story.
musicman

I haven't read all the thread posts so forgive me if its already been mentioned but I am currently part way through the final book (number 6) in Stephen King's "The Dark Tower".

Read much of his other writings although I find that my friends don't like him that much. Odd that as I thought we had similar tastes (hence them being friends). They all seem to read far out sci fi authors.

Hmm.....

MM
numberplease

I used to read a lot of Stephen King`s stuff, then I suddenly got a bit fed up. Enjoyed it all at the time though, particularly The Stand, though some of it was a bit hard going.
musicman

Yes, it can be a bit hard going all right!

My favorite, no contest for me, is Needful Things. IMO the film version was ruined by Chartlon Heston's son, the director.

Oh well ... onward & upward.

MM
shorty

oooh I LOVED The Stand...just finished Ulrika's autobiography, Honest (thanks Dottie)....I enjoyed it, an interesting read but she came across as incredibly naive with men, didn't seem to learn from her mistakes.
madsue

I read that too guest, and enjoyed it. I bought Peter Cook's biography by his ex wife, but haven't really read too much of it yet. I hate to say but I usually read the biggest load of rubbish!!!! I have three books on the go at the moment, that one, Pandoras Diamond, and a Sheila O'Flanaghan one too.
shorty

I am reading "TRIPTYCH" by Karin Slaughter and I cant put it down, its excellent!!!!
numberplease

That`s on my pile, but someone (from Yorkshire) gave me a load of books, so don`t know when I`ll get around to it.
shorty

wonder who that was! The first time I started it, it didn't grab me but I am SO glad I wnt back to it, its very very good!
numberplease

It was someone not too far removed from your good self I believe! Anyway, I`ve still got it to look forward to. I`m still in the middle of God`s Disciple, didn`t find it very easy going at first, but I`m getting into it a bit more now.
numberplease

Must be old age, I meant to say I`m reading God`s Callgirl!!
k&r

i am reading

Scarlett

Ive just discovered Harlen Coben............finished Tell No One, very good.

on the lookout for some others of his in the library today.
madsue

Karen, that book is one of the funniest I have read!!!! Especially at the time I read it

Edit!! Well, if it's the one by Maeve Haran it is
k&r

yes sue it was, i found it really good.........

i am looking for the book now by sarah paines mum..........
Tango Bunny

Just finished Nadeem Aslam.....Maps for Lost Lovers.
Bought it last year as it was a suggested book we had for book club.....as it never actually got nominated for us reading I just put it on the shelf and forgot about it.
Must say I found it hard going at times....the Pakistani names I found confusing as a lot of them are similar and I kept getting charcters confused......but I'm glad I read it as it give so much insight into the Pakistani way of life.
I wouldn't say it was an enjoyable book more.....educational I suppose
numberplease

I`m still ploughing my way through God`s Callgirl, not really enjoying it all that much to be honest, but I don`t like giving up on a book, so I`ll finish it, hopefully today.
shorty

Harlen Coban....some are good and some are crap IMO.

Number, I have read God's Callgirl....cant remember exactly what I thought but I do know it annoyed me a lot at times and I was glad to finish it.

Just read The Blue Zone by Andrew Gross (he has written a couple with Stephen King in the past).......excellent, I loved it and finished it too quickly. Lois I am sure you'll like it I am starting a pile of "books for Lois" cos I am sure I'll see you sometime over the summer xxx
sunbear

Must be going through my volcanic period.

Just finished Krakatoa: The Day the World Exploded: August 27, 1883 by Simon Winchester an interesting account of the eruption and the region.

And now reading Pompeii by Robert Harris, a historical novel set in the period of the famed eruption of Vesuvius.
numberplease

Finished God`s Callgirl, at last, didn`t really enjoy it, but maybe it`s just me that couldn`t get on with it. Does anyone else fancy giving it a try? If so, pm me.
Have started Vanishing Point by Carol Smith, a lot of to-ing and fro-ing between the present day and years gone by, but seems OK so far.
GoldenChippie

Lee Childs new one

The Jack Reacher books

numberplease

Haven`t come across them Polar, what kind of books are they?
Just finished Vanishing Point last night, only started it on Sunday! I can recommend it. Didn`t think it was going to be up to much the first few pages, but then I really enjoyed it. Just started Atlantic Shift, by Emily Barr.
numberplease

Finished Atlantic Shift. Contrary to what I thought at the beginning, I did quite enjoy it, although I found it a bit slow at the start. Am now nearly halfway through Peter Kay`s The Sound of Laughter, and really enjoying it. It`s bringing back a few memories as well.

numberplease

I finished Peter Kay`s book last night, enjoyed it, but it wasn`t exactly what I was expecting. A few bits made me giggle, and he was spot on with the bingo bits!
Have just started The Little Prisoner, by Jane Elliott, an autobiography of an abused child. Will see how it goes.
numberplease

Finished The Little Prisoner. I wouldn`t go so far as to say I enjoyed it, the subject was too sad for that, but it`s a good book, worthy of a read, Am now almost finished with Goodbye Dearest Holly, by Kevin Wells, so very sad, and it doesn`t seem like 5 years since the Soham murders.
Carol

I am reading an irish book. I know no one from here can help me. I am finding it a bit difficult. But will persevere.
shorty

I LOVED The Island and Little Prisoner (know what you mean though, number). Polar I have read some of the jack Reacher stuff and enjoyed them (detective novels).
numberplease

guest, have you read Goodbye Dearest Holly? If not, and you fancy it, I`ll hang onto it for you, I`ll be finishing it before I go to bed tonight, only about 60 pages to go.
shorty

aw thanks Number, but I've got it....a very harrowing but interesting read i thought xx
numberplease

Finished it last night, you`re right, it was harrowing to read, but necessary I thought. Just started Taken, by Chris Jordan, looks promising.
shorty

we are book twins number, I have that one too!! Or is yours the one that was mine before? xxxx
numberplease

No guest, I bought it the other week at The Works. Do you have one round your way? Their paperbacks are £1-99, 3 for a fiver.
shorty

oooh blimey Lois that is MEGA good value...never heard of them, dont think we have them
numberplease

Trouble is, they don`t always have what I`m looking for, but if they can make a profit at those prices, what sort of a mark up do W.H.Smith, Waterstones, etc., make?
