Carol and Number
I actually liked Rose Madder, it brought home very much the horror of domestic violence.............but the ending was a bit dodgy...........I think he may have written it in his "drinking" phase, he admitted on a documentary that the standard of his books went way down.
Did anyone read "Desperation" I thought it was fab!

Did you read the follow up The Regulators, all of the same characters but in a different, but similar story.

I haven't long finished desperation, thought it was great. Rose Madder was good too. I think the only one I have not been 100% keen on was Delores Claiborne

Dougie I read the Regulators, but found it really strange, I persevered with it because I loved Desperation, and at the end kind of thought "what was that all about"

Strange isn't it because I loved the book and hated the film!!
The Regulators / Desperation was an experimental thing, which SK likes to do a lot of, showing how the same characters and same basic plot can be taken in different directions to get two different books.
I remember his experiment in writing Chap Books, that come out a over a series of months Charles Dickensesque, that was the way The Green Mile was originally published in that way.

Hiya Dougie, it really threw me because I had got so "into" the story and the characters in Desperation that when I saw them doing completely different things in another book I just couldnt get my head round it
After speaking to Stacey by pm Im going to try the Dark Tower series! I tried the first one and couldnt get into it, but that was a few years ago, so Im going to have another go!

I read my first Martina Cole book just before christmas, the one about the woman that's been in prison and it turns out she didn't commit the murder she was in for? Can't remember what it was called now. I thought it was very good anyway and will definitely get more of hers.
We have a book shop in town where you buy the book then when you've read it you take it back and get half of the original cost off towards more books. Trouble is when I really enjoy one I don't want to take it back!

Ive read all of Martina coles books and I think they are all brilliant definitely get some more of hers the jump is my favourite of them all

Because the Dark Tower series is so long, you feel like you really know the characters.

Eloisa, years ago I would read anything I could get my hands on by Dean Koontz, I was mad on his books, then all of a sudden it dawned that they were all too much of a muchness and I never read another one. Up until about 5 years ago I`d read every book he`d written.

At the moment I`m reading the second of the Wilbur Smith books that I was given. The first one I read was "Shout at the Devil", and to start with it was hard going because it wasn`t my usual sort of book, then it got a bit better and I quite enjoyed it in the end. Hope the same happens with this one, "Gold Mine", because so far it`s not doing anything for me. I`ve never read Wilbur Smith before, but I`m going to give him a go.

im reading ' little earthquakes' by jennifer weiner--she also wrote ' in her shoes' which is a film now. its quite good, but lots of american references in it. lt week i read ' olivias luck' by catherine alliot, quite good, but the 10 yr old girl in it was written if she as if she was 20--very unbelievable

Currently reading "Body Double" by Tess Gerritsen...first one of hers I have read it excellent. She is a medical examiner and its a murder mystery type.
Recntly finished "Dead Simple" by Peter James....thoroughly enjoyed that, too...another murder mystery type book but a little different. Strangely, I had just finished ity when I heard the author being interviewed on Radio Five Live
The one before that was "A Lesser Evil" by Lesley pearse...I always enjoy her books, quite light readoiing but usually a good plot!

Lesley Pearse is a brilliant but I thought "A lesser evil" was a her worst so far and was a bit let down by it

Just finished Lovers and Liars by Josephine Cox
A bit predictable and tame but I was desperate at the time as I'd read everything I had and library was closed.Mum gave it me.
Before that I re-read the Earth's children series by Jean M Auel.
I know they are aimed at children but I feel they are really meant for adult considering how sexually explicit they are.(from a childs point of view)My 15 year old has read them but I don't think I'd let a younger child read the series.
Just won the book of the month on Ebay so I'm waiting for that to arrive before starting anything else.

I am reading Sight Unseen by Robert Goddard - one of my favourite authors.
When I read a book I like to tryan imagine who would play the central characters i it were made into a film or on tv. This one has a David Jason sort of character, still deciding on an actor for the main guy
Anyone else do this?
|
shorty

Bobian yes I do that too....I was SO disappointed though when the Alex Cross books were made films....it needed someone like Eddie Murphy or Will Smith to play him, not Morgan Freeman!
|

Sorry guest, I don`t often disagee with you, but I thought Morgan Freeman was ideal for the part of Alex Cross, I can`t stand Eddie Murphy, and Will Smith is too young for the part, but each to his or her own opinion, it would be very boring if everyone thought the same about everything. I`ll just carry on enjoying the books.

The Kathy Reichs books are great. The character Tempe Brennan is a police pathologist, much in the vein of Patricia Cornwell`s Kay Scarpetta, but some people think a lot better. I like both writers. Like the Scarpetta books though, you need to start with the first and read in order

The new series on Sky 1....Bones.
It's the same character as that in Kathy Reichs book isn't it
Her name is Temperance Brennan and she is a forensic anthropologist who works hand in hand with the FBI.....starts David Boreanaz
No point in me reading her books if the whole series is built around the same character

I am reading BEHIND CLOSED DOORS by Jenny Tomlin.
Martin McCutchon's mum (Tiff)
It is a story of the abuse she and her siblings received at the hands of her father, Martine's grandfather.
A shocking story, of abuse and neglect by both of her parents.
I am only up to chapter 7, but what a strong woman to survive that abuse.

Fin,ished Wilbur Smith`s "Wild Justice", and can highly recommend it. I`d never read any of his books till rec ently, now I`ve read 4, didn`t enjoy all, but the last 2 were quite good. Just finished "Behind Closed Doors" She must have been a strong woman. Unbelievable, that all that went on and no one did anything about it. Thinking she must be round about my age as a lot of the things she describes were about my time..Even the bit where she mentions buying 5 Park Drive cigarettes, we used to do that.
Now what do I read next, toss up between Tory Hayden and "Ghost Girl" or Labyrinth by Kate Mosse.
