Long weekends.

Any recommendation for 2/3 nights good hotels in the UK? Cities of intrest or large towns type of thing...NOT london or the major ones Brum., Liverpol etc. More your Stratfords / Chesters etc. that sort of thing.
medot

we do have a few short breaks in the village hotels...but they're mainly up north so good for us but could be a bit too near home for you.

How about Edinburgh - loads to do & see, and not too far from you

Its worth considering.....more for later in the year maybe - when we wont need three jackets!
GoldenChippie

well if you want the best (and i cant believe you'd pay) you want the Grosvenor - right in the town centre

or the Craxton Wood - out of town but v posh
nickmacuk

The last 'smart' hotel we stayed in had a heli-pad out the back. Any links for these places?

ps which side of £150 a night are they? (thats me limit - after that they are taking the piss!)
THE THIEF OF BAD GAGS

how about this place just outside chester http://www.devere.co.uk/Hotels/Ca...efault.aspx?EQID=01190186-9999999

this is the Grosvenor http://www.chestergrosvenor.co.uk/iflash.shtml

Craxton Wood http://www.macdonaldhotels.co.uk/craxtonwood/?ac=ggppc1

or there's Nunsmere Hall , which is where the last radio times cover featuring Jill DANDO was photographed just before she was murdered and it came out the same week

and yet again theres is Knutsford and the Longview http://www.longviewhotel.com/ famous for being Martin Bells HQ when he fought the election

Ive found quite a big 'divide' in the standard of UK hotels nowadays. Where you would expect a gradual increase/decrease in standards as the price went up/down....there seems to be a distinct £50-75 a night threshold. Anything below, i find very average, and most times above - you can be sure of a bit of quality. Ive got past the stage of 'cheap and chearful' when im looking for accomodation. Other folks hair in the plugholes, 'marks' on the walls, and peeling paint are things i dont want to find in a hotel room nowadays. Weve done the scrimping when the kids were young and we were skint!

ps..just found time to peruse those hotels - very nice!
GoldenChippie

if you have a look in the weekend papers - there are usually hotel group offers in there - ive seen the Craxton wood a few times
GoldenChippie

some offers here for Village hotels if thats any good

We have just had a lovely weekend in the Royal garden apartments in Edinburgh for our anniversary.

They are on Queen street which runs parallel with Princes street and everything is within walking distance so you can park you car up until you leave.

There is a reception which is always staffed, breakfast room/coffee lounge, housekeeping come in on a morning and clean (they even washed up our breakfast things)

we paid for a one bedroommed apartment but when we arrived we were given a two bedroomed apartment so we had a bathroom each and lots of room for getting ready to go out. we had sattelite TV, cd player, internet connection.

It cost us £255 for two nights but they are 4 star and worth it

Looking in the papers is a good tip. I really enjoy it when checking out at a hotel and only paying half as much as the next couple who had just accepted the price was the price,
Also quite enjoy the small independent hotels, at least you know you are somewhere different. Most of the big chains you would have no sense of where you are till you leave the hotel they are all the same.
Last week was a good example of a bargaun we stayed at the Wye Valley Hotel in Tintern got a deal £40 p..p BB &. D. I think it is only ** or *** but it is clean and comfortable (we had the same room as Dennis Waterman had used when filming in the area so if its good enough for him its good enough for me) The food was superb much better than some **** & ***** I have been in. You also get the personal treatment in these kinds of establishments.
GoldenChippie

yeah but you can get some rubbish ones too lol

i seem to get rubbish ones on spec when we do bike tours lol - maybe its how we look!!!

The food in some 4 and 5 star places is too pretentious sometimes. more for looking at then actualy eating.
McBabe

We don't eat in hotels, we prefer to go out to a restaurant.

same here..we rarely get dinner as part of the deal...too expensive!
McBabe

Hotels have a sorth of 'captive' audience but restaurants have to compete.
nickmacuk

Prefer to eat in when we've been walking its nice to relax with half a doz lagers and and a couple of bottles of wine
Another thing we used to be in was that "Free Accommodation" thing you see in the Sunday papers stayed in some really nice places, it is part of the deal that you eat at the hotel costs average about £35 pp per night some of the hotels either have min. stays or restrictions on certain times but we always managed to get fixed up for where we wanted to be.
