Where to go 2008

Looking at Majorca again,Not too sure where.
Any ideas anyone?
pedpolly

Im a bit biast....love mallorca , Alcudia for nice beaches, Magaluf a lot cheaper but hectic.
Fenderman

I like Cala Bona and Cala D'or but have been there twice in the last six years.
we went to Cala Bona 2003/2007,Cala D'or 2001/2004,Santa Ponsa 2005 and Palma Nova 2006.Wasn't too keen on Santa Ponsa and Palma Nova/Torrenova was a holiday from hell.
Visited Porto Colom,Soller,Porto Cristo on days out.Deb likes Cala Bona/Millor.We  went to Sa Coma for the day this year, stayed one hour and got a taxi back to Cala Bona.Never been to Alcudia,Pollensia or Can Picafort.
Maybe should look at Lanzarote or Tenerife and party with Sue Or Laws
madsue

That sounds a much better idea Fenderman, come to Lanzarote and see me, or Tenerife and see laws!!!!!!!  For me, Soller is the best place in Mallorca, or Pollensa
Acorncup

We're wondering where to go too, ped and fenderman.....

We've been to Puerto Pollensa lots, and it's just right for us...we like a quieter resort...

Have been to Alcudia too, th0ough....love some shade on the beach, which you get further down from the port.....

but we're worried in case we get bored with PP...

BUT would hate to have a duff holiday somewhere else

I've researched Santa Ponsa, and it didn't fare well in the reviews......

Ho hum...what to do????
Fenderman

Hi Sue and Acorn,
Been to Lanza once, stayed in The Cactus Apartments in Pocillos. We only had a week back in 2000.Also been to Gran Canaria,Maspalomas,Didn't like it,Too many drag queens in the Yumbo Centre   Also been to Ibiza. Can't make up my mind about Tenerife.I've always fancied going back to Lanza.Just don't like 4 hour flights.
madsue

Well it is only ever 3 and 1/2 hours here.  The four hours quoted is just so the holiday companies don't have to say they have gone over their alloted time!!!!!  So they always arrive "early"

You would have a good time here I'm sure!!!!!!!
Aspira

Tenerife is great the first time Laws and i went we weren't to impressed can't get enough of the place now.

We have our own apartment and i would love to live there 24/7 unfortunatley got to work till we win the lottery lol.

Went to costa Teguise in Lanzarote stayed at the Sol Apartments loved it there to.
Fenderman

Hi Sue/Aspira,
We went to Costa Tequise for a day.Again wasn't too impressed.Much preferred Puerto Del Carmen. We usually went into Del Carmen for a meal.Lanis and other places then ended up later in the Venue at Pocillos,a bar run by a welshman.Every act was from Opportunity Knocks or New Faces .Don't know if it's still there. Also went to Tequise market. That was ok.
I do want to go back to Lanza.
Don't know about Tenerife.I suppose we should give it a try but the reviews on Las Americas are varied.some good, some bad.We usually go away in August but we're not 18 to 30 Christianos looks better.Don't know if i've spelt the names right
Another problem is package or DIY.
Acorncup

I think tenerife is very hot in August?
Fenderman

I don't mind hot.
pedpolly

The thing with majorca is that its an island with every taste covered, there are lively parts like magaluf and also some lovely quiet coves
we have been going for about the past 11 years and always hire a car and still find new places to explore. Sa Colabra is a favorite of mine a bit scary the first time you drive down the mountain
Last time we went we stayed in the old port area of alcudia and it was a world different to the bellevue area of the resort.
Fenderman

Also posted in General chat,
Booked the Cala Bona Hotel for the first two weeks in August,Half board with Thomson.Good deal £742 for air conditioned twin room,£348 for flights.£1090
For two weeks in Majorca in a 3 star. Last year £250 dearer at the Bahia Azul,Cala Bona with hard uncomfortable beds.
Just the taxi to sort out now.
Acorncup

way to go, fendi

but have you seen the exchange rate lately?
Fenderman

Hi Acorn,
I hope it improves before August
Acorncup

So do I...but we're going to Tenerife in 3 weeks time

1.27 euros to the £ we got today

Good job we're going half board......
Fenderman

Acorn,
How was your holiday,Where's your review
costapacket

I think it depends what kind of holiday you are looking for on Mallorca.

We always liked Puerto Pollensa for the beach and there is a lovely place called Pine Walk.  Bars, pine trees (obviously) and then the beach - no cars.

We have stayed in Palma Nova in our younger days.  Plenty of things going on and if my memory serves me right there is a water park nearby and other touristy things.

Some friends of our went to the city of Palma for a short break and loved it.

We enjoyed an excursion to the Caves of Drach (think that's how you spell it).

In saying all that haven't been to Mallorca for years so the places we went to may have changed a bit but all in all we have fond memories of Mallorca and I'm sure you will have a great holiday there.
Acorncup

ooh costa...Puerto Pollensa is our favourite place
costapacket

Have you been recently then Acorn.  I was wondering if it had changed much over the years.  We were told that they were not allowed to build over three storeys high with any future builds.  Although I know the Hotel Diana and Hotel Capri on the front were over 3 - are those hotels still there?  We stayed three times at the Villa Concha do you know it?
Acorncup

We went last year, and are booked to go again in September!

We are more familiar with the top end of PP near the Pine Walk (we stay at Puerto Azul). There has been a lot more building "behind" the Pine Walk, the other side of the main road, but surprisingly this doesn't seem to have made the difference we thought it might. Yes it is limited to 3 storey buildings, most of them are private apartments rather than hotels (there is one Thomson superfamily block, the Playa Mar), they are quite well hidden by the trees, and most of the Boquer woods have been preserved.

There has also been a school built behind the Puerto Azul. This was closed for the summer last time we went, don;t know what sort of noise it will produce in term time  but heck the local kids need a school.....

The biggest change has been the building of the bypass, this is a dual carriageway cut behind the town and coming out on the Formentor Road behind the Playa Mar (if you have got Google Earth on your computer, you can see it all ). The bypass is a big help to the traffic in the town, and although it is an eyesore to the view from puerto Azul  there is not really all that much traffic, so it is not noisy at the northern end anyway.

When we first arrived in 1995, at about 10.30pm, we sat on our balcony and watched and heard goats which had escaped from the Boquer farm,  maa-ing and clanking along in the scrub behind the hotel looking for wild figs and any grass, .......
Still, things always change.....

yes the Daina is still there, I expect you know the prom all along from the taxi rank to the Pine Walk is pedestrianised now? sadly there were some bad storms a few years ago, and several of the larg pine trees along the walk were destroyed by it, which has left some huge gaps......
some of the old villas have been pulled down and new ones squeezed in, but many of the charming ones are still there, and the PW is still a haunt for peaceful holidaymakers of many nationalities, including Spanish, who love the relaxed atmosphere there

Don't know the villa concha, but I'm sure it is still there
When did you visit?

we have got friendly with the head waitress at Puerto Azul now, and always meet up and go for a meal out when we are there (on her day off!!) she has 2 young children now. When we first met, she told my hubby off for wearing shorts to dinner.....nowadays they have to allow this, she was nealry attacked by a guest over the subject once  but we now respect the Spanish tradition of being smart for the evening meal and trying to make an occasion of it, because they work hard to try to make it special for us .

I have posted my 2007 holiday photos here...see below for the link.....but as you are a new member you might not have access to this private section yet......we have had some trouble with new members in the past, and so you have to be a member for a while before you are "allowed in" and I don't know if you are yet......

We first stayed there in 1987 and stayed at the Diana.  In subsequent years as the family grew we looked for an apartment as hotels do not take 3 children in the room with you.  The Villa Concha was in a quieter area.  As you walk away from Pine Walk along the coast in the direction of Alcudia you cross a bridge (where you can see the big fish) and it is just past there, set back one road from the front. Way before the Hotel Pollensa.  I don't know the place you stay but many thanks for the update.  We must try and get back there as it is a really lovely place.  Have a great holiday - well I know you will
