Hi guys
Went I went last year, it was on an organised trip from one of the travel agents on the strip (wouldn't bother through the rep if you have one - inflated prices for the same thing! Same with car hire too).
The trip we did was just a half day, which for me was enough although there are more trips that take in Kyrenia, etc. as well. The jeep picked us up from the hotel early morning (I think about 6 or 7am) and you then go to the border, the driver takes all the passports and you get slips stamped there (they don’t stamp the passport itself). The driver then takes you along the green line (which is what marks the UN buffer zone where Varosha lies, the ‘ghost town’ part of Famagusta) so you can see the property and everything left etc. within the buffer zone. He then took us to a Famagusta beach next to this buffer zone, where the hotels have been left and are just in ruins and also the bombed Salaminia tower. Along the beach is a Turkish armed post, and there are signs everywhere saying it is not allowed to take pictures. I did, however, so if anyone would like to see them, let me know and I’ll post them (I’ve got loads of all sorts of Cyprus piccies!!)
Then, back in the jeep, you are taken around the town and on to the excavated ruins of Salamis, which is an ancient city dating back to 11BC or something! Nice café with large terrace there where you can get drinks, etc. and overlooks the sea. We then were taken back into town, where the driver will leave you to do your own thing for a while, nice street cafes, we climbed on top of the city walls (views across the town) and there are a few shops. Got dropped back at the hotel at about 1.30pm.
It’s strange because it is like Cyprus, but it’s obviously very different to the South and does ‘feel’ different. Of course it’s very Turkish. The trip was enough for me, time wise, I think the whole situation is very sad, but I’m glad I went.
The people were extremely welcoming and eager for you to buy their goods, after all they’re only trying to make a living. You have to go with an open mind definitely, after all, there are two sides to every story (although I have more sympathy for the GC’s!)
Kezza
p.s. blimey, sorry I really have gone on a bit there! Still, I could talk about Cyprus all day and I’ve only just got back from there last week!! If anyone wants to see the pics let me know.

Hi Emma
Had a lovely time thanks! All too short though, still I will be back there im just under 9 weeks, so can't complain! Not long till you go now isn't it?
We booked the trip through Kariatis (sp?) on the main strip opposite the Sunrise Beach Hotel, although there are loads there to choose from. They can be a little pushy though, last week I went in to change some money, which she did, and then tried to push trips on us, which unfortunately we weren't over there to do!
Anyway, I digress. I'll post the pics in a separate subject now, along with some other links I've got in my favourites, with more pics, they're really good.
