Well done!!
I'm old enough to have done proper cookery at school......we started in year 7 with grapefruit and scrambled eggs, then scones, chocolate crispies and so on.
gradually worked up to O level, making cakes by all the methods.....victoria sponge, whisked sponge, melted gingerbread etc, and pastries, shortcrust, sweetcrust, puff, pork pie type (can't remember what it's called, had hot water and melted lard in), proper sauces with butter, flour and milk.....
casseroles, meat and offal , vegetables, salads and puddings.
I still use my Christmas pudding recipe from school (we even made and decorated a Christmas cake in year 10 or 11!)
It was a really good grounding in basic cookery and I'm really grateful I did it.
So if you never had this chance at school, I think you are very sinsible to teach yourself. I wish you luck and success, it is a great thing to be able to do. home made things are much tastier, often cheaper, and don;t have all those additives and piles of salt in....
but the downside is that you will create a lot of mess and washing-up

well the easiest way to start I reckon is buns, then you can top them with icing made of icing sugar and water, dead simple!
4 oz butter (I use stork actually)
4 ox caster sugar
2 eggs
4 ox self raising flour.
I use a food blender but you can do it by hand if you are strong!
Mix the butter and sugar until the mix is light and fluffy.
Add the eggs one at a time with a little of the flour, mix well.
Then add the rest of the four, beat it up well.
Divide the mixture between hm...should make about a dozen buns I think....so put paper bun cases in a bun tin, fill the cases with the mix, cook in pre-heated oven at Gas 4 and a half (sorry don't know what that is in electric) for about 20 mins but keep an eye on them, as soon as they are pale golden on top they are done.
Get them out the baking tin and onto a cooling rack.
When they are cool, mix icing sugar with water (you will be amazed how little water you need) until its a thick but spreadable consistency and spread it on the buns.
Very quick and easy and yummy!

BANANA and CINNAMON MUFFINS........
4oz Wholemeal self raising flour
4oz demerara sugar
2 eggs
4oz butter
2 teaspoons cinnamon
large mashed banana
These are a nice healthy trat for lunchboxes etc - lovely and moist.....
Also try adding diced apple instead of(or as well as) the banana....
Or add grated lemon or orange rind and top with lemon icing....
Or try date and walnut?
The list is endless once you have a basic recipe....
This is really just a "brown" variation of guest's bun recipe - I like to make guest's basic buns with my little boy and his cousin or friends - we make up bowls of different coloured icings and have lots of sprinkes etc -very messy business
