help for next years holidayright after hearing a few of you on here rant and rave about cyprus...i'm thinking of booking next year.
if i go it would be sometime in the middle of september...or possibly the middle of june.
can someone tell me ..in simple terms...what the weather is like at these times....would we have any chance of rain...or would it be mega hot.
can you also recommend an area to stay in.
it will just be me and hubby...i'd like a bit of beach...bit of night life but nothing like ayia napa (sorry but i've seen too many of those tv programmes thats put me right off of this place).
any help would be appreciated...thanks..xx

It will be hot hot hot , i would reccomend Protaras more than anywhere , i prefered there than Ayia Napa , but i havent been to Paphos whcih i fancy , i dont fancy Limassol at all
but as i always say if i could predict the weather fior next sept i would do the lottery every week :):):)
|
medot

so would it be hotter in september than june??
and when you say hot hot hot ...are you talking roasting hot.
hubby doesnt really want anything hotter than 30c...not sure how hot that is
|
THE THIEF OF BAD GAGS
|
I would say June is hotter september will cool down but not too much , in september it will be quieter , the resorts will start to shut down due to the season closing down , i went in Feb last time and Ayia Napa was dead and protaras was half closed as they were doing major roadworks on the main street but it was still ok , but spetember shouldnt be that bad i hope (it snowed in feb as well :):))
|
medot

ok...say i was to go in september....would it be too cold to swim in the sea??

Should be ok , i would think but i tend not to seaswim unless its scuba so cant tell you , i am sure someone else who has been in september will be able to help you

Hi medot
Not been there in June myself, but have been in July, April and September. April was warm through the day but the nights definitely had a chill to them! Most places open beginning of April, but some are end of the month, but by June all will be open. I would say that June and September are about the same for temps, etc..
When we went in September last year, we found it hot during the day (but not unbearable) and still pretty warm in the evenings. It was also a lovely crowd of people that time of year - more mature!! Protaras is fully open right until 31st October, so September would be ok.
I would also say that the sea and pools would be warmer in September than June as they've had the summer heat right through.
September would be my choice!
Hope that helps

Hi Medot.
I was there in June and am going back in September.
In June it was late 90's and even went over 100 degrees for a couple of days.
I was there at the start of October last year and it was late 80's to early 90's.
Noy sure about the sea as I never go in myself but there were still loads of people in the sea last October.
I like to go to Pernera which is a small resort next tp Protaras but normally go into Protaras at night.
|
Cromwell
|
I gree with CL.......... Pernera Is lovely....... a resort just outside Protaras.......
As for been expensive? Personally I dont think It Is......... we went In July this year, and we were paying around £2.50 for Bar meals........ and around £7 for "main" meals.......... Lager was around £1.50 per pint......... and I never got charged for Lime either
Base your prices around English prices and you wont go far wrong......... and even be pleasantly suprised

right having a little look round and seeing what you've all put here.....THANKS.xx.....its looks like i'm looking at protaras..or near there for next year.
is it worth hiring a car?? bearing in mind i'm looking for going for just a week to start with.
if i did get a car...how easy is it to drive around...i can still remember the steep drops when we went to corfu!!
do you have to barter to buy things??
ok stupid question...but whats the toilet situation over there...is it the same as corfu...ie dont flush the paper away!!
and has anyone got any sites they can recommend so i can look at any pictures, check out the tourist information for the area.... ps....many thanks...to my friends here for your help....xx

We satyrd in Limassol and found it boring.....the hotel was fab but there was just nothing to do in the day or night.
We visited Paphos and Protaras for the day and if we went back I'd go to Paphos I think...it seemed a bit more lively.
Never done Aiya napa but have been told it's quite nice and not just for teenagers as I thought

Hi Dottie
Discover Protaras.com Is a great site........... It gives you a lot of Info about Protaras......... Including accomadation, activities, Bars and Restaurants, to name but a few........
A word of caution though......... Cyprus goes to the Euro next year........ so prices will probably rise, I would expect........ but thats the same as everywhere I suppose........
|

oo ooo another vital question...do i have to get any jabs
|

No Jabe required Dottie.........
We always hire a car when we go to Protaras........ you have to see the Troodos Mountains aswell........ beautiful Theres a little Village called Trimikini.......... you can go Into a garden........ Its half a mile long apparantly......... and right at the bottom Is a Waterfall......... I will try and post a picture on here for you We paid £50 for two days for an open top Jeep

The only place in Cyprus I wouldn't go for a holiday is Limassol. We have been to Ayia Napa 7 times and are returning to Paphos next year (1st time was 11 years ago when we got married). We would consider Protaras as a change to Ayia Napa as after returning from Ayia Napa 3 weeks ago we were glad we'd been back as we'd had a change in Mallorca for a couple of years but we feel we have done everything it has to offer which I suppose isn't bad after 7 visits!!!!!
My Sis-in-law has just come back from Limassol and unfortunately it has put her off Cyprus. She wasn't impressed at all with Limassol and she says she found the locals ignorant?!?!?!?! I did tell her before they went that I had never fancied Limassol. It's just a shame she chose it for her first visit to Cyprus and now it has put her off.
To a first timer we would definatley recommend Ayia Napa. Our first holiday there in 1993 was the best holiday we've ever had.

what kind of age range does Ayia Napa cater for nowadays?

Ayia Napa caters for everyone. If your aged 0-100 it's for you. We went twice as a couple in our 20's and went for the first time as a family when Nathan was 3. He is now 9 and loves it. I could go on forever selling Napa to you but I'd rather not bore you to death before you have the chance to try it for yourself.
Anthing else you want to ask I'd be happy to answer. I'm always happy when I'm talking holidays.

As promised, this Is the Waterfall In the Garden (theres a small charge for you to go In, but Its worth It)........ In Trimikini Village. There are also Hens, Chickens etc walking around........ not to mention Peacocks
This Waterfall Is about 15 minutes drive further away......... further up In the Troodos. definitely worth a visit......... but Its down quite a few steps, then you have to go over some rocks and water........ but Its worth It.

medot flight is about 4.45 hours (that was from glasgow) its not too bad. Larnaca isn't a huge airport though for coming home and when we flew back the shops were shut for a stock take.
Hiring a car is a must. Cyprus is such a beautiful island and it is easy to get about. Also if you stay in ayia napa then you can jump in your car to nissi beach which is just beautiful!!

Have been to Cyprus twice Paphos and Protaras....
Paphos has loads of shops restaurants a lovely harbour also some historical areas ...it is quite a big area after 2 weeks we were still discovering new places, beaches are very rocky here there are only a few sandy beaches
Protaras is based around one strip of bars restaurants and 2 discos you have the smaller area of Pernerna with restaurants and a some shops , the beaches here are lovely and very sandy
Yes they do drive on the left like us there motorways are brilliant hardly anyone on them.
A trip to the Troodos mountains is a must fabulous views
The capital Nicosia you can actually go across the border now but do take your passport with you
Ayia napa is a must during the day coudn't handle it at night time
Sorry to go on a bit but i love Cyprus

right after a bit of hmming and hrring....it looks like its going to be...Paphos...i think!!!
the last three years i've had a beach holiday and i really want to "see" something more on this holiday.

I've been to Ayia napa a few times but always early or late on in the season.
It is brilliant nightlife is what you want it to be.
If you fancy a mad night out then head for the square. if you want quiet then then harbour is for you. Beaches are fantastic.
Limmasol didn't like it, infact i hated it. And i would never go back there. Just driving through it last year gave me the creeps. No beach to speak of. And it is more a big town than a holiday resort.
paphos only stayed for 1 night and i didn't care for it much. Again not much of a beach to speak of. But had a nice little harbour.
protaras stayed here about 10 years ago and i liked it. Not enough nightlife for me then, but there are lovely bars and restaurants here. Oh and it has a lovely beach.
Car hire is easy and they drive on the left. We hired an open top jeep. And i wouldn't let mr wicked drive it at all.
it was my jeep.
This year were getting a scooter.
We may hire a jeep and drive down to paphos for the day. it takes us about an hour and half to drive down to paphos. then on the way back we will visit Limmassol (shudder) and Larnaca.

ahhhh so if i was to stay in pathos...i could easily get to protaras if i hired a car.
for car hire is it best to do it before we go...or just get it out there.

it is easy to get from paphos to protaras but it can take around 1.5 hours.
If i remember rightly it is just a matter of starting of at one end and finishing at the other end.
When we stayed in Ayia napa, we hired a jeep for the day.
We left Napa around 10.00am and drove to larnaca had a drive around and had breakfast.
We then went to Limassol parked up went for a bit of a walk, then had another drive round Limassol.
Then we continued to paphos stopping at Aphodrites rock on the way.
We parked up at the harbour and went for lunch then we had a wonder round the harbour. Then back in the jeep and of to the tomb of the king just outside paphos.
We left paphos around 5.00pm and we arrived back in napa at 7.00pm
it was real easy to do this day out.
The 2nd time we went we just drove straight down to paphos as we booked into a hotel for 1 night to stay with friends of ours who were there the same time as us.
Hiring a jeep is real easy in Cyprus.
We always just hire one when we get there, usually for 3 days as you get a good price for 3 days.
and we never know which days we want the car. We just make that decission when we arrive there.

Dottie I'm here at last
I think you've made a great decision by deciding on Paphos
There is so much to see and do in the area and if you hire a car
you can travel the whole island easily. It's great driving over there
as they drive on the same side as us and the lack of traffic on the
motorways and main roads between towns is fabulous.
There are loads of lovely hotels to chose from in Paphos.............
from basic up to 5* plus. This map will show where the majority of
them are http://www.kypros-cyprus.com/maps/paphos.jpg
I know you love waterparks so have a look here http://www.aphroditewaterpark.com/
and here http://www.fasouri-watermania.com/
If you want advice on hotels tell me what you're looking for and I'll
give you a list
The weather will be hot hot hot!!! and the water warm enough to swim
in the sea or pool............last September we couldn't get the kids
out of the sea
Gosh Dottie there is so much I want to tell you about
Expect a lot of pms
Just to be different from other people...........I found Limassol to
be very interesting with lots to see and fabulous shopping

I would say Its around 3 hours to Protaras from Paphos Chris........ when we went to Troodos Mountains It took us two hours........ and Paphos was still another 60 miles to go........
We were thinking of driving on to Paphos when we came back from the Troodos Mountains, but decided against It....... It would have been too long a journey for us........ especially the kids
......... Nice to have you back Helen

We`ve been twice to Cyprus, each time in April, and had lovely weather each time. The first time we stayed in Limassol and the second time in Paphos, liked both. Aiya Napa we liked when we went during the day, but wouldn`t fancy being there at night, mainly because we`re boring and don`t like noisy night life, we prefer to go out and about and see things during the day, and just relax with a quiet meal at night. We drove from Paphos around the coast to the border checkpoint at Kato Pyrgos, found a hotel there that served great food, right on the beach, and the scenery on the way round was out of this world.,It took us about 2 hours to drive from Paphos to Aiya Napa, stopped off once to look at Larnaca, but didn`t like it, apart from the fort.

Hotel / apartment recomendations would be good as well
|
maggie

Trish once you have been you will want to go back again and again
I loved both Protaras and Pathos but would prefer Pathos if had the choice
While in Pathos we visited Polis, Latchi, Aphrodites Baths , Coral Bay ,Pissouri , Troodos Mountain, Limassol
While in Protaras we visited Ayia Napa , Larnaca, The outsirts of Famagusta , Pernera, Nicosia, and we went accross the turkish border. We also visted lots af tiny little villages while we were there.
What are you looking for Hotel ar Apartments ?
|
sunbear

Actually I'm not a Cyprus fan...I have difficulty understanding the fuss people make about it....especially Paphos...still most others here will diasagree with me so it seems I'm the lone dissenting voice.
|
maggie

Sunbear it all depends what you want out of a holiday
Myself i like to go and explore an island or anywhere i visit .
|
Trish
|
I like to explore as well maggie ... love finding places more off the beaten track .... as for accomodation, I think I would prefer an apartment this time.
Paphos sounds great ... but the lack of beach puts me off ... best beaches? which resort?
Thanks
|
bluebabe
|
Trish there are small sandy beaches dotted round Paphos and a beautiful
sandy beach at Coral Bay a few miles away Most of the biggest
beaches are at the eastern end of the island..........Protaras, Pernera and
Ayia Napa
We love Paphos as it's got lots to see and do in the area and is handy for
going to the Troodos mountains, Pissouri, Limassol, Polis and Latchi to
mention a few places Pissouri is a lovely place to visit with a really good
beach and fabulous tavernas serving many different types of food.
Polis and Latchi are beautiful and worth the drive..........superb
tavernas serving fresh caught fish. Limassol is a city with its own charm and
fabulous shopping, restaurants and bars. There is so much history there to see.
God I sound like a Cyprus tourist guide but to be honest I love the
place and am quite passionate about it.
I'll shut up for now
|
Trish
|
Thanks for that Helen, it sounds beautiful!
I would want a beach that I could just walk to and save the driving for sightseeing I can't see the kids being too impressed if we had to drive every time they wanted a dip in the sea, they hate being in the car at the best of times .... but for trips and sightseeing they would just have to live with it
All the places you mention sound lovely .... I'm gonna look into it .... wonder what the flight time is from Belfast ... will have a look ..
Cheers
|
bluebabe

You're welcome
The flight time is about 5hrs Trish. Don't get me wrong, there are beaches
in Paphos you can walk to..........they just aren't huge
