Have landscaped it.........need plant advice please!!!My back garden is "half" done!
After putting in 105 railway sleepers to tier a slope, and putting in about 20 tonnes of topsoil, last year we planted some shrubs etc which are spreading nicely.
BUT! I just dont know what other types of plants to buy to fill it all out.
Its in layers, each layer is 2 railway sleepers high, and there are about 4 layers in the slope. In the middle of the slope there is a flight of steps made out of the sleepers also, and on the other side I was planning to put in some kind of rockery type thing..........dont know what yet! (Its on a steep slope too)
Ill take pictures, as its only half done it wont look too impressive, also as its winter nothing will be in bloom................what kind of plants should I buy that will "hang over" the sleepers and break it all up, the ones I have are "straight" ones..............also what should I do with the other side of the steps................any ideas? Oh and what "creeper" type things should I buy to hide my fence...............Ive got the horrible side and it needs covered up!
I know no one will be able to answer this till they see the pictures, will try and put them on tomorrow...........but if you can visualise it please try to help with some advice.
Many thanks!

Scarlet, for the softening of the sleepers - stuff to 'tumble over', you want to be looking at the rockery perennials. Alysums, Arabis, Aubretia, Campanulas, Dianthus,Geranium, Helianthemums, Helichrysum, Iberis, A number of Sedums. Also, think of Heathers and bulbs for winter colour.
Hope some of this helps.

If you want to hide your fence get a couple od Clematis....montana type is fast growing with profuse flowers
If you want all year round cover then go for the evergreen variety like CIRRHOSA or ARMANDII

Thanks guest and Tango!!! Great help there, Ill print this out and take it with me to the garden centre, Im afraid although I am quite "artistic" at setting it all out and know what way I want it to look when its finished, the actual planting bit I have no experience of whatsoever.

My neighbour planted a Clematis against her "ugly" side of the fence but, it only flowers when it reaches my side.. .. I just cant help reminding her how lovely it looks from my side of the fence ... wicked but funny.... ..
It does look lovely though as i have a Jackmanii my side which flowers pretty much all through the summer and the neighbours Armandii flowers twice a year early spring and late summer. Not sure if theres two plants in there somewhere but it looked like just the one stem when she planted it.
If you go for clematis mix them up as you can get continuous flowering throughout the summer but, be carefull as they can run away up any nearby fruit trees or ornamentals in your neighbours gardens..

lol..the clematis are just chasing the sun....if your neighbours side is the 'sunny side' of the fence - they will get all the benefits of flowers!

I have mine mixed with Akebia quinata and Akebia alba...they are commonly known as the choclate vine and although the flower is small ans waxy in appearance it gives out the most divine smell of chocolate in the evening.
I also have an Actinidia kolomikta which is a vine with stunning foliage of dark green cream and pink ,Campsis radicans or the trumpet vine....dark green foliage with huge orange trumpets...needs tying back though although it's a vine it's not the clinging type
Euonymus is a nice evergreen creeper and cames in various shades of green, breen ans cream ,green and white and green and yellow.I have two varieties and they to give a lot of coverage.
I'll go and take some pics for you if you like
oh hang on I might have some somewhere

That's the lawn that we are digging up at the moment....you can see some scorched patches on it there ...well now it's 10 times worse so we are flagging it instead.....I don't want to but it's not practical with 3 dogs constantly using it as a toilet

Lorrianne thanks for the pictures, your garden is lovely!
Re the clematis, weve got the sunny side of the fence so hopefully we should be ok with it!
Id planned to go to the garden centre yesterday to stock up, but it was piddling it down.............so its put back to next week!
thanks again!

What a lovely garden lorraine
What about some hanging geraniums or fuchsias? I've also got lots of petunias which straggle down!!!

They are lovely but do'nt grow all year round here like they do in Lanzarote...or do they??
I assumed they do as whenever I've been to Tenerife/Spain they are out
I think she's after all year round coverage.
I love those tropical plants you get in the canaries.Do you have Flamboyan trees in Lanza like they do in Tenerife

Not sure lorraine whether they grow all year round! I'm sure the petunias don't, but I think I had fuchsias in my UK garden. I was just thinking that as spring has arrived in UK that they might be a nice idea to mask the sleepers for a few months.
Umm, flamboyan trees? Not sure what they are! Do you have a piccy? If they are real trees I doubt it, as Lanzarote has no trees really, apart from palms.

Took these in the grounds of Hotel Las Palmeras last year
that's oh looking like a plank under the tree by the way
|

Oooh, aren't they pretty (and the "plank" looks not bad too ). I think they may be the type of trees planted up the middle of Calle Real in Arrecife. The leaves look a bit like the jacaranda? There are some of those on various complexes.
Indiginous trees we don't have

They are fab trees and when they have finished flowering they have large runner bean like brown pods.I managed to coax one from one of the gardeners and potted on the 3 seeds I had from it when I got back.I managed to get 2 seeds to germinate and even got the plants up to about 4".
The plank overwatered them and they rotted away and died.....he's good like that....obsessed with watering plants
|

|
Then we definitely do have them here as I have had one of those brown pods for years!!!!!!! Had no idea what it was so just kept dusting it and putting it back on my shelf!!!!!!
My problem is I forget to water things so they die very quickly, which is why I stick to buying the cheap plants!!!! Or they get eaten by the slugs (see other thread )
