chocs...can i ask ..is it worth growing strawberries....i tried before and they took up loads of room for not many strawberries.

i'll just be growing tomatoes and lettuce....both will be shared out for us and the piggies
Trish

Dottie, try your strawberies in hanging baskets. Takes up less room. Just keep them well watered.
I grow toms, peppers, carrots, spuds, onions, cut & come again salad leaves and raspberries.

Choc I grow spuds in buckets, so they don't take up much room, just tip the bucket out to harvest ..... and best of all, no digging

I tried replying yeasterday, but the connection was timing out on me. Ive grown spuds in the ground and in half- barrels. The Anya variety is good for tubs etc.

trish...i have tried hanging basket strawberries before but i just didn't get enough strawberries for it to be worthwhile.

i have doen triling toms...and they were lovely

Dotty, you have to give them feed all the time as the baskets only have limited soil..

Make sure you put water retaining crystals in the baskets. plenty of tomorite..
im going to look for a new variety of strawberries next week..
trish, thank too, just a ordinary bucket. and do you fill it up gradually as the plant grow..
thanks guest, might try planting them in a crock pot...
Trish

Chocs, yes, just ordinary buckets. I just use those buliders buckets you get from B&Q ...

Drill some holes in the bottom and around the sides, for drainage. Put a layer of gravel, then some soil. 2 seed potatoes is plenty in these buckets. As the foilage grows, cover with more soil, leaving about an inch or so above the soil. Just keep doing this till you reach the top of the bucket. Once they begin to flowers, water plenty, as the tubers need it to swell. For first earlies, no need to wait till the flowers die back. Just tip the bucket out and you should have lovely spuds. For second and main crops you can wait till the flowers die back and the halums turn brown, before you harvest.

Dotty, chocs is right. You need to feed your fruit, as the compost will only have a certain amount of nutrients. Pick regularly, to encourage it to keep fruiting. The water retaining crystals are a good idea if you forget or don't have time to water a lot. The wind can dry hanging baskets as much as the sun, they really do need regular watering & feeding.

I have a sprayer i bought last year, but i accidentally covered a car that was parked near my fence so i had to clean that aswell, before the owners came home..
