Disappointed with Dublin.

Just got back from 4 days in Dublin and It wasn't what I expected.

We flew with Ryanair no problems there.
The hotel was fine The Comfort Inn had everything we needed.
Did I like Dublin?
It was O.K
Would I go again?
NO.
Carol

What did you not like about it.
What kind of things did you do
Pam7

Oh such a shame Charlie!!!

We (4 of us...myself and O.H....my sister and her O.H) went with Ryanair couple of years ago...and haven't stopped talking about it!!! Keep saying that we will have to arrange to go back...and our trip was in late October/November when it was quite freezie too! LOVED it! We stayed at the Parliament Hotel just on the edge of Temple Bar!

What places did you visit??
charlie

We did everything, we went on the tour bus visited all the sights but I found it a bit of a let down. I felt like I was at home in Birmingham.
To many people to much traffic
Beggers and drunks every where and that place Temple bar.

We did have fun on the Viking ship round the streets.
We had a good night at the Arlington I think it was called , thats where they had an Irish show on , there I felt like I was in Dublin.
I think I expected to much . People had told me how lovely it was and what a great place it was.
To me it was just like any other City. Not very Irish at all apart from all the gift shops.
There was a lot of building work going on which made it look very scruffy.
So It's probably much better .
I'm glad I went but I wouldn't go again.

If we go again I think we will try the more rural places in Ireland.
Carol

Charlie I know exactly what you mean you should probably go to the West of Ireland
Trish

Sounds like you'd prefer rural Ireland Charlie. Dublin is like any other big city, with regards to amount of people, traffic etc .... have to say I loved it when we went.

Maybe a nice cottage up in the North west. Bun beag is beautiful, very quiet, but not too long a drive into Donegal town for a wee bit of life.

ahh I absolutely loved Dublin, and i dont normally like cities!!

having done a big tour around the countryside as well it was a great place to finish off

Suppose meeting carol for a drink helped too!!!.

But - i loved the shops, the bars, restaurants were great, the park at the top of the shopping street was lovely.

I would definitely go back

Have to admit I was not to taken with Dublin either...to much like a UK city on a Saturday night with too much emphasis on the booze. Maybe it was the area we stayed in but felt it was a bit scruffy. I'll stick with Prague.

We visited friends who live just outside Dublin and they took us into Dublin itself for a day.  We had a great time.  Went to the Guinness factory, did the tour bus but the thing I remember the most was that because of the smoking ban people were smoking outside the pub wearing their PYJAMAS
McBabe

I loved Dublin, we stayed at the Morrison hotel just over the river from Temple bar, we did the guinness brewery, the bus tour, Jamesons distillery but mostly just walking around, I enjoyed the temple bar area (didn't see any drunks but then we were not out late, we were back at the hotel before midnight)

I would go again, we didn't get to see the book of kells so I would like to do that next time, we went on the Sunday and there was a massive queue so we left it.

I must say Ireland is lovely, we spent a week driving around starting from Dun Laoghaire, we stayed in Glendalough in the Wicklow, Wexford, Blarney, Kenmare (on the ring of Kerry), Tralee, a house on the edge of Lough Derg and finally in Blessington before catching the ferry back home, everywhere we went we stayed in family b&b's twice staying on farms and the people were great.

Oh Charlie what happened, I have been to Dublin 4 times and loved every minute of my time there.

Sorry you were disappointed, better luck on your next holiday.
Pam7

Yes...we did go back again too!  Like McBabe, we did the Guiness factory, and the Gordon Gin factory, Book of Kells (an excuse for you to go back another time McBabe ).  Also to the smallest or was it the oldest pub?  Thoroughly enjoyed ourselves again.  Stayed in Temple Bar this time too.
McBabe

Oh no, I didn't know about the Gordons gin factory     we went to the oldest pub in Dublin too on our way back from the Guinness tour   god we sound like piss heads
Pam7

PMSL McBabe..it WASN'T gin..it was whiskey  .. Old Jameson Distillery LOL!
pepsigirl

I've been there too...Jameson distillery they had one tot for 80 euros about £64  but tight old hubby wouldn't buy it for me. It was a 100 year old whisky and a bottle went for £1750.00 and believe it or not they did sell some!!
