I first took my family on holiday to Salou, the main beach is very safe for children, it stays shallow until quite far out and is very clean, it also has little play parks right along it too. There are lots of family orientated bars and restaurants. There are shops galore on practically every street. the massive theme park Port Aventura is a short bus ride or walk away and is really good for the kids (and adults) there is a water park there too. The resort of Cambrils is only 20-30 mins along the road by bus if you want a taste of "real spain" its an old fishing village, there are shops, bars and restaurants to visit or you can wander around the old parts.
La Pineda is in the opposite direction from Salou, by bus it takes 10-15 mins, its much quieter here than in Salou, the beach is nice, its quite narrow. There are a few shops, bars and restaurants here although they are mostly spanish. There is also a big water park here too called Aquapolis, it also has dolphin and sealion shows.
From these resorts you can visit the towm of Tarragona, it has a shopping centre, markets, old roman ruins and more.
Barcelona is easily reached too, a coach passes through the resorts each day, you can get return tickets to take you there. You can also go by train, or if you would prefer with the reps.

saloucan anyone advise on the best resort for a middle aged couple, la pineda or cambrills, is it safe, only read some bad reports over hotel robberies and pick pockets, do you feel at ease at night, i know you have to be careful about anywhere but don't want to go to a place that is known for it

I've stayed in Cambrils many years ago at the Cambrills Princess....while it was very nice I did find there wasn't much to do in the area....prefer Salou but then we like to be nearer the action.....cambrils is lovely if you want a quiet holiday

Rosie my mom and dad go to Salou every september and love it. They stay in the Salou Pacific. They find that it has quitened down a lot in September and they love the Prom. for walking along.
