Columbus Aparthotel PDLA

Booked to go here after paying it a little visit last year.We were impressed by the public areas and thought it would be a reflection on the rest of the hotel
Well I got that one wrong.
On arrival the chap at the reception desk didn't know his a**e from his elbow.Took ages to book us in and we were the only ones checking in at that time.Wouldn't let us buy a safe deposit key as he said he was too busy as it was check in/out day.we would have to come back in the morning....buggar that pal if you think I'm going out for a night in PDLA with all my money/creditcards either in my room or on my person you've got another thing coming....I left OH there to stand guard until he was free and then pounce on him for a key.
Got to out room(we had requested a quiet room) and we were on the first floor surrounded by teenagers.
This was a 1 bedroomed appt meant to sleep 4...the idea before seeing it was that daughter would have the bedroom as that way we could leave her sleep in of a morning and OH and myself would have the sofa bed..... wrong again
Sofa bed was the type with a pull out drawer which could be raised on legs to turn the sofa section into a double bed....ok in theory except the under bed was about 4 " shorter than the sofa bit so there was no way it could be used as a double bed.OK I can hear you sau whynot use them as separate beds.ummmmmmmmm sofa 5' wide.... husband 6'.
So poor child had to sleep on the 5' bed while we took the bedroom
Now the bedroom is designed for anorexic dwarves.
lie 2 people side by side in the single beds pushed together and you can if each of you puts out an arm....literally touch the walls at either end.I had a measuring tape in my travelling sewing kit and amazingly there is 10" between the side of each bed and the wall and 8" from the bottom of the bed to the wall....there were 2 bedside tables in there but they could only be placed at the side of the bed if they were side on.
Plenty of storage in the double wardrobe although not enough room to pull the drawers out before hitting the bed.OH kept knocking his head on the top of the wardrobe and couldn't get dressed in the room as there wasn't enough room to swing a scrawny cat.
Going to the toilet in the dark in the middle of the night was a scream u had to squueze yourself flat against the wall and feel your way around so that you wouldn't bump against your partners bed and wake him up.
The reast of the appartment was adequate and the balcony was quite large which in my opinion is just really poor planning they could have easily chopped off a foot from each area to have given a more spacious bedroom.....
There was no air con ...not even celing fans....yes you could hire a fan from reception but where in the bedroom was I going to put one...there were only 2 plugs 1 behind the bed.....no good plugging in there then....the other was at the foot of the bed......listen here trying to limbo dance to the bathroom in the dark was enough of a challenge without making it into an obstacle course......so we all baked for a week..........enough moaning about the appartment now.
Onto another moan
We asked for a quiet room...now while we don't expect it to be peace and tranquility putting us in a room with 4 lads 1 side getting in at approx 6am every morn,3 girls the otherside who had a constant stream of giggling mates in and out at all hours of the day and night and 2 couples upstairs who could bonk for England.....is not my idea of a quiet room.We asked to upgrade to a superior room the following morning but was told nooooooooo you have to do that when you first book in....well duh you don't know what your room is like until you get to it .
Despite the hotel being 99% young and lively on the whole most of the teenagers were well behaved.Just the lads next to us who gave a us a few interuptions in the wee hours and some lads opposite who were even noisier when they came home bladdered. The security is very good and anyone misbehaving is thrown out not to return until they have sobered up.There was a fight there on the 4th day between 2 groups of lads at about 5.30am but security called the cops and it was sorted in no time.
The complex itself is fantastic.Huge pool with walkway bridge spanning the centre.A choice of 3 places to eat including a chinese.a gym fitness room, a sauna, jacuzi turkish bath, games room, internet cafe, hairdresser, pool bar,and supermarket. They also have a good activities team offering water polo, rifle shooting, killer pool, ping pong etc..
There is a bit of a rush for sunbeds in the morning.....they are chained up until 9am and then there is a mad scramble for them.
Reps were rude and bossy.despite leaving a leaflet under the door for our arrival telling us about welcome meeting she still rang our room at 8.45 to rimind us to attend(we never do)As she'd mentioned there being a problem with tickets I thought I'd go and see her later to see what the problem was....She had the cheek to tell me off for not attending....she got a gobfull back.I know more about the bloody island than she does and I had no intention of booking trips with them when they were charging an average of 12 euro more per person.Just to make her day I took her name and said I would be naming and shaming her on the customer survey forms you get on the plane.
Talking of surveys this is the first hotel I've been to that didn't require we fill in a customer satisfaction survey when you leave.....I wonder why
The hotel itself isn't in a bad location....a bit of a hike up the hill but still pretty central.
At the end of the day we didn't pay a lot for this holiday so can't realy complain and I would return here earlier or later in the season not in teenybopper times....next time though I'd make sure I had a superior room....but only before checking one out first.
