Black Pepper

Whilst watching "Come Dine With Me" Channel 4 a couple of weeks ago, the man cooking (cannot remember his name but he was quite posh) was using black pepper and said he only uses Indian black pepper as it has a much better flavour.

I love black pepper in my food and thought I would give this a try. Just done some searching on google and it would appear all black pepper comes from India. I have also had a look in Asda and Sainsburys but their black pepper does not tell you the source.

So does anybody know. If I bought some from say an Indian spice shop, would it be that different from Asda's own?

Thanks

Sorry, can't help you with your question, but I love this show

I find it great that you can put 5 strangers together and they can cook for each other - I would be a nervous wreck!

black pepper comes from india, asia.
so that bloke obviously dont know what he's talking about.
the difference in white and black pepper is the length of time they are left on the vine to ripen..
white is when its left longer...
and whole black pepper corns which are green when picked and left to ripen in the sun, are more flavoursome when crushed as the hard ripened shell holds in the flavour.

Black pepper
Hot and pungent black pepper is one of the most popular spices in the world. Native to India, today it is cultivated all over the tropics as a commercial crop. India is the biggest producer.

Origins
The principal exporters for Black Pepper are India (Malabar and Tellicherry Pepper), Indonesia (Lampong Pepper), Brazil and Malaysia. Tellicherry is actually a special type of Malabar Pepper designated for its bold size and uniform appearance. Both have excellent flavor, aroma and pungency properties. The flavor and aroma of Lampong Pepper is similar to the Malabar type. The Malaysian and Brazilian varieties are relatively milder in flavor.

Thanks for your replies. I think I will have to go to a specialist shop and try some. I have checked a couple of supermarkets and all own brand or Schwartz. None seem to give origin neither.

I hate supermarkets!!

I use the Rainbow Pepper from Tesco's.
Red, Black etc.... a very nice taste. It comes in it's own pepper mill too
