Don't know if anyone has found this author and his series of police books about Inspector Banks.
I was given the latest in the series, loved it and then found there were 19 others
Alan Banks is grittier than Morse, more believeable than Rebus, and set in a fictictious yet wholly credible North Yorkshire town. Banks is a great copper; has his foibles (of course) has prejudices, likes and dislikes you can understand, and starts out married, with teenage children.
If you want to give him a try, start with the first in the series:
Gallows View.
