Can anyone tell me if there is a difference between paprika and sweet paprika in a recipe? I've never heard of sweet paprika. I have ordinary paprika in the cupboard but don't want to use it if it's the wrong one.

That IS interesting Dougie...it seems the red paprika is sweeter and milder and the yellow paprika is hotter.I'll have to go and look in the cupboard to see which one I have then. Thanks for that.

I think Dougie has beaten me to it, but I think it's called sweet paprika to differentiate it from what in UK we call chilli powder.

And yes, when I was a teenager, my Mum and I made goulash with 2 dessertspoonfuls of chili powder in

We weren't so clued up on foreign food in those days

It's a bit confusing. Chilli powder and curry powder smell the same to me. Are they?

No, chilli powder is made from ground up chillies

and curry powder is made from a mixture of spices such as turmeric, cumin, coriander, ginger, garlic, cardamon etc. depending on the type of curry e.g. madras, korma etc.

Apparently curry powder is an English invention, in India they use the individual spices......

What are you trying to make, hbrac?

Well, I have a Slimming World "Book of( Low Fat) Currys" and I was flicking through looking at the ingredients. I was puzzled by the sweet paprika but now that has been explained I have looked in my cupboard and my paprika is red. Then there are lots of different curries using individual spices instead of curry powder and then there is chilli powder I think in one recipe.I am ,as we speak, marinating chicken breasts in yoghurt, crushed garlic and turmeric and then I will follow the rest of the recipe tomorrow. Hope it's not too hot!

I think you can add as much or as little chilli powder as you want. I wouldn't add more than a pinch unless you want it quite hot.......it will still be spicy from the sound of the recipe, and the chilli powder mainly just adds HEAT

Your paprika will probably be fine as a flavouring without being hot.

We couldn't eat that goulash we made with chilli powder.........

Hope you enjoy your chicken tomorrow :)

Well I'm still in the chat forum?

hbrac, paprika tastes like....well I don't know how to describe it, but it's not peppery or "hot". You can eat it "raw" sprinkled on cottage cheese, although it's best in tomato-ey casseroles like goulash (or curry I guess!) And you use it in quite generous quantities.

It's best to have it fairly fresh i.e. not a jar you've had in the cupboard for years.

Apparenlty it's a good source of potassium (not that I can remember what we need that for.....I think it balances with the sodium/salt in the body. )

I often sprinkle some on top of shepherds pie before I bake it, as it adds a bit of colour.
