Gail We went to Kefalonia but about ten years or so ago. Loved it, it is a beautiful island. If you do go, a must do is the island trip which takes you to places like Fiskardo and Assos. Some fantastic scenery as you go through the mountains to the other side of the island.
We stayed on the Lassi peninsula but I would have thought it is busier now after all these years.

We went about 6 years ago and stayed in Lassi
Fiskardo in the North is absolutely beautiful, If I went again thats where I would stay.

I wouldn't say it was expensive but prices may have gone up since Captain Corellis mandolin was filmed there.

I went to Kefalonia nearly 3 years ago with my daughter, her 2 children, and a female family friend. We stayed at Mounda Beach, just outside Skala, and had a lovely time. It wasn`t all that cheap, but not overly expensive either. A good trip out was the boat trip to the island of Lefkada, sailing from Aghios Efemia, and sailng past quite a few of the other islands. I`d go back like a shot if I could only persuade my husband!

LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT! We've been three times....last time was quite a few years back now....but we actually thought of buying a place there at one time! Its quite a 'wealthy' island.....you'll find the Greeks go there for their holidays! We stayed once in Lassi....and twice we did DIY and found a fantastic apartment in Argostoli itself.

Son went back there about 4 years ago....and said that the area between White Rocks Hotel and Argostoli has REALLY been built up now...even have pavements - and YES.....it was certainly MUCH more expensive there now!

Here you go Guest
.... http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0238112/locations most of the filming was there...but where they have the unexploded bomb was at Myrtos Beach...which is up from the main town on the left of the island Argostoli. It looks like its a glorious white sandy beach.....but when you eventually wind your way down..its enormous white pebbles...I have one in the garden to prove it!

The current at Myrtos beach is too...so go careful if you go in the sea there. Best beaches are at Lassi....Long Beach and Short Beach...something Plyatos! Been 3 times...any more info?

That links waste of time...try this instead http://www.kefaloniatravel.com/ke...ia_captain_corellis_mandolin.html and this http://www.travel-to-kefalonia.com/photo.php?photo_id=18

I read the book and fell in love with the place through it's description. Then when I watched the film I knew I wanted to go there.

If I stayed on the island in the most popular area would it be possible to hire a car and drive to the place/s where the movie was filmed???

You can easily do the island in a day. We've always stayed left of the island....Lassi...and then twice in Argostoli itself. (The accommodation that we stayed in the last twice in Argostoli..we go through their tourism site...just got flights....you HAVE to have a 'place' to say that you're staying at) then just got flights. Got taxi from airport to Argostoli and met they guy in a car hire shop! Gerry then took us to the apartments. Better than a package deal!) However....elder son went back there couple of years ago..and said whole area has now changed. Our first accommodation was now a shop! Lassi has built up A LOT! Fantastic beaches there though! He said it would be better if we didn't return...cos it would spoil it for us from what it was like before! You MUST go to Drogarti Caves....(look these up on the web for more info!)...Melissani Lakes - where the water travels UPHILL! Go to Fiskardo for the day..top of island...beautiful..and see how the other half live in their small cruise ships that dock in the small harbour. Probably NOT a good idea to visit the great big new 'church' where St Gerissimo lies..embalmed! We stopped off there one day....he lived in a hole under ground for years and years..and the church is built over this. Sons and O.H went down the hole...crawled along and into a tiny chamber. Meanwhile...I was sitting up top in the church looking after the bags etc. All hell broke out with these greek people pushing towards the back of the church! Being nosey...I pushed through them...only to find that this was some special day when the priest opened up the foot end of this glass coffin...where St Gerissimo lies....and you were supposed to bend in and kiss his feet! I've never back peddaled so fast in my life!!!!

Thanks pam. great information! I am looking at going there next summer. I was going to book a packaged deal but I will look into DIY also. When I went to Kos I did DIY and got cheap flights on a charter Thomas cook plane.
