Ok, silly question. Does grass seed have a "use by" date ? I mean if you have old seed thats been in a box in your garden hut for a few years and you sow that - will it grow ?
I have a lawn with lots of brown or bald patches on it. No matter what I do, I cannot grow grass on the bare bits. maybe this is not the best time of year to be doing this, spring or autumn I know is best, but I just failed again. Raked/ scarified the soil , sprinkled some extra loose soil on top mixed with grass seed. rakedit gently. Covered over with string mesh to keep the dog and the birds off. This was 2 weeks ago.
Nothing ! Clover , yes, chickweed, yes, Grass - not a sausage !
Any good tips which WILL work, anybody ?

I suspect it's passed it's sellby Frank
If you've had it in your shed then it will have got warm during the summer and been prone to a touch of frost maybe in the winter.....I think it's probably lost the power to germinate
me thinks you need to invest in a new box.....try the harder wearing variety it's less prone to scorching _________________

| Frank, theres a fair chance the brown/bare bits have 'compaction', or a very thin soil covering large stones etc. Try working a fork right into the brown bits and opening the soil every six inches. Then rub some grit sand in. If you do this before reseeding, it will help re-growth. |

Get two bottles of merlot. One bottle vodka, bacardi, whiskey whatever you fancy. some lemonade or coke, two sixpacks of beer/lager
Drink for 3 hours Preferably with some female company
I know sod all about making grass grow
But if you follow the above you will stop worrying about it for a bit |

ok this is not a joke
its a true story
when we moved into this bungalow the lawn was not down
we got a wee local man to do it
and we watched and watched and watched every day for this new grass
then one morning i was overjoyed to see a green haze
which i naturally thought was my grass
no
it was weeds
ok so my grass came next
i went to a local chemist (its a country town
and the chemist supplies the farmers)
with one of the weeds and he identified it
and gave me weedkiller that would not ruin the new grass

I know this is a bit late foor this thread BUT If you want to fill bare patches of grass in a lawn First get a bucket some sand and grass seed. Put the sand and grass seed into the bucket add a small amount of water leave for about a week them cover the patches the seed will have already germinated and your of to a good start.
I was reading in one on the other treads about snails. Well if you put a ring of copper wire around your pots they will not go over the wire. I know this wont kill them but it will stop them eating your plants _________________ Try everything and regret nothing

Or get your wallet out and buy some turf...instant results!
Personally I would concrete it then paint the concrete Green.
