I actually managed to see this on TV as I was in the UK and frankly I felt let down and disappointed by it. Not enough 'ballet and stage stuff', a weak love plot that was not in the book and I couldn't take either 'Theo Dane' or 'Nana' seriously.
Am I alone in this - well no one else has commented so far ..........
And SORRY PED ...... I found the Dr Who special nauseous - too glib, not enough scary action or use of the imagination, and SORRY EVERYONE, Kylie Minogue does not justify her 'star billing'. Now where's the door?

I used to love the Noel Streatfeild books....do you remember the Gemma series about a singer, that was set in more up-to-date times?
but I loved the the book of Ballet Shoes. haven't read it since I was a child though. I felt that the adaptation certainly had the image of the book right, from the illustrations I had in mine....but like you Alsa, there was too much "plot" and not enough dancing or the children's viewpoints..I always remember the bit in the book where they all had gastric flu (because I'd never heard of it before, only ordinary flu!)
it was stupid to put a love interest in what was a children's story......children aren't interested in the grown-ups feelings .
I think it would have been better to make it a weekly series with several episodes, for children, rather than cram it into 1 and 1/2 hours for adults. But it is nice to see some drama still being made, and not just reality shows
And re the Doctor Who.....well it is just a roller coaster of a show, and you really need to watch the "Extra" programme afterwards, to find out what it was all about
but I have to admit I find David Tennant very attractive |

You're welcome to him! Give me Christopher Eccleston every time!!!
I agree with you about Ballet Shoes ... I loved it as a child and also 'White Boots' about an aspiring skater! I also read the Gemma series and just wished that I'd bought them - oh the days of public libraries and Saturday mornings!!! - did Noel Streatfeild write anything for adults? |

I watched it but didn't think it was as good as the book, although maybe it's just because I'm older
I tried to persuade my two to watch it with me, but unfortunately, in this day and age, it just didn't hold their interest. _________________

crew you're not as old as I am
Alsa woo hoo you can have Chris and I'll have David....that's fair
And I found this site about Noel SF...
http://www.collectingbooksandmagazines.com/streat.html
I don't know if I've got any of her books any more.....probably not, as I had 2 sons might have given them to my niece.......
I expect we could get them on ebay? (remember to look for streatfield as well as streatfeild ) (but pm me if you're going to bid on any )
I definitely remember "The Painted Garden" about a girl in a film....."The Circus is Coming" and I might have had "Apple Bough" I'm sure my sister's old Ballet Shoes book had a bright/bottle green cover with a B&W drawing on??????? I've just found out that the original illustrations were drawn by Ruth Gervis, who was Noel's sister, and who also illustrated some of Enid Blyton;s books!. |
