Well the BBC 4 documentary wasn't well publicised, and I stumbled on it by accident just in time. This 3 part scientific stunner concludes tonight. It sets out to tell the story of how scientists worked out , first that matter was made of atoms and then what the atom contained. It covers the story with very good graphics and analogies (Horizon style) , and explains the rivalry between the scientists on the front line of this research area. It shows that whilst Einstein was a genius at the large scale physical behaviour of matter, he was beaten by others when it came working out to what was inside the atom.

Well I'm on my own then. Brilliant Brilliant Brilliant. Maybe in another dimension everybody understood it and raved about it. _________________

ooh ....ah.....now to summon up the enthusiasm.......
poor old atomic physics, the cinderella of science
I have a strange relationship with physics....our teacher was completely loopy...a fascinating man who rambled on about philosophy and scientists etc, took us to lectures at the Royal Institution in London, .....but taught us the wrong year's syllabus for half a term, once
then shouted at me when I asked what a volt was......
then I had to do A-level physics to get into uni, and first time round (!) out of our class of 5, only one person passed (not me )....so I went back to school for another year , but he was banned from teaching A-level by then, and we had to troop off to a nearby school for physics lessons
Anyway I passed it second time round, and the rest is history |

Well if you got A level Physics - good for you. I never had the chance to do A levels, I was forced to leave school to earn some money. Luckily physics was part of a later Electrical Engineering degree which I studied. I have always been interested in Astronomy , Cosmology, and the physics of the Big bang and this stuff is just great for me.
I once watched a Royal Institution Christmas lecture about this subject, they went into Quarks, neutrinos etc. Pure heaven. _________________

Fortunately my older half sister was married by this time with 2 kids, and I had no other siblings so there were only 3 mouths to feed...plus in those days you could get a grant that paid for accommodation and fees .......
I know I was lucky to have the chance to go to uni but I do earn my keep nowadays
Did you ever watch the Bronowski "Ascent of Man"? it was excellent but when we tried to get our son to watch it, he thought it looked too old fashioned
I still get a bit lost with physics, and 4th dimensional things...which my hubby likes to talk about |

Yes I like all kinds of stuff like that, Horizon, The recent series on Time, I've read Steven Hawkings "A brief hstory of time". Actually there are supposed to be 11 dimensions, with membranes floating in them. When 2 menbranes meet. ...Big Bang ! _________________
